    Glass Carboys are soooo awesome!

I've got two 3-gallon carboys and four 1-gallon carboys. Love watching the yeasties go to work. Don't think I'd want a full size glass carboy because I don't think my back could handle it, but then again I don't do full size batches very often anymore.

    Parents who brew...

With a baby, its easy. They're asleep all the time and you're stuck at home. Might be a little tired from sleep deprivation, but plenty of time to brew. I've got a 3.5 year old. I brew every once in a while when he's home, but since I work one weekend every month and get to take a day off...

Listened to it at work today and really enjoyed. First podcast I’ve ever listened to and it was because of you. Nicely done.

    BIAB kettle question

That would work fine. I use a 2.25g pot for my 1 gallon BIAB batches.

    6 Gal recipe??

Jamil accounts for .5g of trub left in kettle and another .5g trub in fermenter. He also uses Rager, not Tinseth for his IBUs at least according to Brewing Classic Styles

How to decrease 5g to 2.5g

Most of my batches are 2.5 gallon (some are one gallon or even 1.5gallon). I take a recipe that I want to try, input it into Brewer's Friend and use the scale tool to scale it to 2.5 gallons and have no issues. I usually take the hops and convert it from ounces to grams to be a little more...

pH Meter That Doesn't Need To Be Calibrated?

Calibration is just something you have to do. I work in a lab and we have expensive pH meters and we calibrate them everyday, first thing in the morning with a pH buffer of 4, 7 and 10 and then do a second source of 7 from a different vendor just to make sure they are accurate. There's no way...

One Gallon All Grain with Mash Tun?

When I do one gallon batches, I do full volume mashes in a 2.25g kettle with one of Wilser's bags. I get my water up to my desired temp using http://www.biabcalculator.com/ , add the bag, stir in the grains and then put in a pre-heated oven as mentioned above. The only thing I do different is I...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback. I brewed a one gallon batch of pale ale with all Neslson yesterday. 92% 2-row and 8% Crystal 60. Debating on whether to dry hop it or leave it as is. Around 5.3 ABV and 40 IBUs.

Hop Substitution - Chinook for Horizon?

I'm going to be brewing an American brown ale soon and the recipe calls for Horizon as the bittering hops. I don't have any on hand, but I do have some Chinook. Can I use the Chinook as long as I account for the different AAs to get my IBUs? Or would it be better to just pick up some Horizon...

    prepare to drool

I'd do a mix of hickory and pecan. Actually, I'd use mesquite, but some people find it too bitter. I grew up in South Texas and mesquite grows like a weed. The only thing to do is cut it down and use it for barbecue. I grew up on it, so it doesn't bother me.

    Want to get into brewing

I like @madscientist451 last bit of advice. I started with 5 gallon batches, but ended up having way too much beer around. Downsized to 1 gallon batches, but then I didn't have enough beer around (although I still do experimental 1 gallon batches). I've settled on 2.5 gallon batches (nets you...
