    CO2 PVC Stand

Thanks archi77. One neat thing about sharing DYI projects is that they give others a creative idea or thought on how to solve something for their particular set-up. And then that idea can morph into something else to solve a similar problem. Things to consider include the selection and...

What I did for beer today

Kegged my first all-grain BIAB, a Dry Irish Stout 5 gallon kit from Northern Brewer. O.G. 1.042 spot-on as predicted per kit, but F.G. 1.015 a tad bit high. Mashed at 153F for 60 min. Was hoping for F.G. 1.011 using Safale S-04 yeast @68F ambient conditions. Sample (ABV ~ 3.54%) tasted...

    Tap and beer line cleaning?

First, a warm water rinse of the beer line and faucet using a small pond pump submerged in a plastic bowl. Then, a 15 minute (minimum) recirculation with Beer Line Cleaner (BLC). If really dirty, then repeat again with fresh BLC solution. Next, a rinse with warm water, then lastly a star-san...

What I did for beer today

Kegged 5 gallons Mosaic IPA. OG = 1.066, FG 1.017 thus ABV ~ 6.4%. So S-04 yeast attenuation good at ~ 75%. Aroma of Mosaic hops with that tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics excellent. Need space in Kegerator before chilling. Gonna drink some Kolsch and solve that issue!

What I did for beer today

Brewed my first BIAB (Dry Irish Stout) in the Bayou Classic 8-gallon kettle using my new Avantco IC3500 240 VAC induction plate. Worked great, too. A good strong rolling boil, thus had to back off to 2300 watts. Met target gravity 1.042 after 60 minute mash at 153F and a 60 minute boil. A few...

Using 120v electric to pre heat mash and sparge water

I use this heat stick. Easy to replace the element, when needed. Note the parts list should include 2 - 2" tri-clamps instead of 1. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/index.php?posts/8672739

BIAB - Water Retention Factor for Grains

Just so I can understand the basis for different values and to satisfy my never-ending curiosity on anything related to brewing. It helps me to better understand the technical details. This is only one of my numerous brewing obsessions. For example, drinking good home brew is another one lol.

BIAB - Water Retention Factor for Grains

I'm trying to understand the water retention issue for grains as I venture from extract brewing to BIAB. As with brewing, there are seemingly endless schemes and methods other brewers use to make an excellent batch of home brew. I enjoy the math behind the process, and am doing all the...

What I did for beer today

Kegged 5 gallons Kama Citra IPA. Strained and added the tequilla and jalepeno tincture that had been "marinating" for 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Sample tasted excellent. Purged with CO2, placed keg in kegerator, chilling and carbonating at 12 psi 42F. Added a spoonful of the leftover diced...

    What are you drinking now?

Oatmeal Stout. The last pour from the keg, brewed from a partial mash kit from Northern Brewer. My first partial mash, and that's enough incentive to go all-grain now (at least BAIB). Brewed tons of pure extract kits, so this attempt was by far the best yet. Mmmmmm love it!

You know you're a home brewer when?

While preparing a bowl of cold breakfast cereal, you figure out the grain bill, grain temperature, batch size, and mash temperature. But wonder if your bowl size is sufficient for mashing at the proper milk to grain ratio of 1.5 qts/lb. Then you thoughtfully consider how long to mash and how...

What I did for beer today

Installed blow-off tube on my Mosaic IPA. S-04 yeast going crazy after pitching late yesterday afternoon. Good thing I checked it when I did to avoid a potential mess.

    Induction cook top heat control?

Note the Avantco IC3500 specs indicate a maximum pan diameter of 10.25". What pot diameter(s) do brewers successfully use with this induction plate? My 8 gallon Bayou Classic kettle is ~12" diameter. There is a suggested weight capacity of 65 lbs, which implies roughly a ~8 gallon maximum...

What I did for beer today

Sliced and diced 7.40 oz. Jalapenos (seeds and all), soaking in 7 oz. Hornitos Reposado tequilla. Will add to my 5.5 gallon Kama Citra IPA, maybe at kegging time or a few days prior, but sometime after the 1 oz Cascade and 1 oz. Citra dry hopping event on fermenter Day #14 manana.
