    Keggles - Bulkheads vs IC's

What kind of havoc have you read about? Not sure if I could address your concerns without more info. If you're just worried about banging the end of the thermometer probe all the time I guess I'd just be careful not to do it. Your IC would have to have a tight enough circumfrence that it...

    Iodophor explosiong . . . silver lining

So I'm in the middle of my brew day and I go to fetch a bottle of iodophor from the basement - one of the big bottles. It slips out of my hand and when it hits the floor the cap breaks and I have about a third of the bottle all over the floor, walls, and everything else in the room including...

Is AG really that much cheaper then extract?

Depends on where you live. If you're out in BFE - as I am - and have to have all your supplies shipped then AG gets expensive pretty quick.

Looking to buy this kit - what do you think?

Yeah, I've actually put together identical shopping carts at two or three supply sites before (done it three times actually - I was bored) and Midwest has always worked out to be the least expensive. Some sites offer free shipping but they make it up plus some on the price of the goods. The...

random yeast packs in the freezer . . .

Anybody ever pitched a dry yeast packet that had expired? Does it still work or will it lead to problems? I have one Mutons and one Doric, the Doric is expired. I've read lots of recommendations that if you're going to use Munton's you should use two packets. Since I only have one, I'm...

    non-weizen yeasts for wheat beers

I'm kind of tired of the banana/clove vibe in my wheat beers. What's your favorite non-weizen yeast for wheat beers? AHU

    I love google trends

I'm kinda proud that she's from Oregon. Is that bad? BTW, where can I get that bumper sticker?

So I need a good digital measuring scale

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5390883 This is the one I use. Works well for my needs . . . but I haven't used it to weigh out any huge quantities of grain yet.

    Dry hopping question...

If you have a fine mesh hop bag you can sterilize it and put it over the end of your racking cane. I do it all the time - works great.

The stupidest comment on your beer

I gave a sample of IPA (he didn't the whole thing) to a really old dude at a social event one time. He has German ancestry and is always saying random words in German or with a bad German accent. He swished the IPA around in his mouth a bit and says "Mmmm, lots of flavor. Must be some kind of...

    False Bottom or Bazooka?

Buy both if you can swing it. I use both and the false bottom is great for holding back 99.99% of everything but the screen catches all the little buggers that slip through the false bottom.

    Scored some Demijohns!

Try TSP. Tri Sodium Phospahte if I remember correctly. Available in most hardware stores. Besides cleaning carboys, it is used a lot I think to clean glass in preparation for painting. Just rinse well.

So I poured out a batch the other day...

Yep, I've dumped one before. A spiced ale that I'd prepared for last Christmas season. Soured it real good.

    one step closer to AG

Three sankes - you could make a HERMS system (as noted by Bobby). I followed this guys plans, more or less, and I love mine. (No high-tech solenoids in my system). http://brewing.velociworks.com/main.html

Got a kitchen strainer? One with screen door type material? That'll get most of it out.

    New Belgium Spring Ale, Springboard

Just finished my first bottle of it. Interesting . . . reminiscent of some beer I've had before but I can't put my finger on it. Looks like a blonde but tastes kind of like a golden strong ale. Probably won't buy it again.

    fruit addition prob?

Yeah, quadruple checked lid and airlock for tightness. You might be right - everything could be cool - but I've just never made a fruit beer where the addition of all that sugar didn't result in some vigorous fermentation. Think I'll add some more yeast tonight and see what happens.

    fruit addition prob?

60 hours since fruit addition . . . still no visible fermentation. Any objections to pitching some more yeast? I'm out of the Nottingham but I have a couple random yeast packets in the freezer for "emergencies".
