    Pet Hair

I know how you feel. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. I brew in the kitchen so I'll section it off from the pets and sweep the floor/dust and then spray down all the counters with star san. So far I've been lucky and have not have any issues. I switched to kegging my beer so I don't have to worry...

My first dumper today: a sad lesson but not what I expected

Sadly I didn't have much time so I smelled it, tasted it, had a buddy do the same and immediately dumped it. MY buddy attached the following to a Dewalt drill and let her rip for a good 5 min. Of course it could be contamination but I've never had that issue before. We star san absolutely...

My first dumper today: a sad lesson but not what I expected

It was after the boil during cooling. This is what I found: You should not aerate when the wort is hot, or even warm. Aeration of hot wort will cause the oxygen to chemically bind to various wort compounds. Over time, these compounds will break down, freeing atomic oxygen back into the beer...

My first dumper today: a sad lesson but not what I expected

I thought I read in a few books that the aeration is only good if the wort is at a cooler temp. The wort was somewhere around 175F when he started.

My first dumper today: a sad lesson but not what I expected

I had my first AG dump yesterday. Not sure what went wrong but when I transferred it into the secondary I tasted a sample and it was awful. The only thing I could think of was my buddy wanted to try something to get the trub to whirlpool into the middle of the kettle. He attached what looked...

How long does it take for your to drink your homebrew?

My wife sadly doesn't drink beer so a keg lasts me 3-4 weeks if it's just me drinking it. I got my buddy into AG brewing last month and we share our brews with our band and friends who swing by our jam space. With 4-8 people drinking out of the kegs we go through about 1 a week. Right now...

Getting poor efficiency, how to measure mash tun temperature

After 2 consecutive successful 3 gallon BIAB on my home stove I brewed a full 5 gallon batch today using my mash tun, hlt and 19 gallon kettle with a blichmann 4500Watt boil coil. I stirred my mash tun every 15min for an hour at 152F and used a glass thermometer as well as a fairly cheap...

Best place to buy hops by the pound?

Thanks guys. yakimavalley has the best prices and shipping so far. Hopsdirect has great prices but want $61 to ship 8lbs to Canada.

Best place to buy hops by the pound?

Hey guys, I'm buying my grain in bulk locally and am wondering where the best place to by hops by the LB or preferably 1/2 LB is. I currently pay $20 per LB but the selection is limited at my LHBS. I'm in Canada but don't mind buying from the US as long as the shipping price isn't ridiculous...

Getting poor efficiency, how to measure mash tun temperature

I just started a quick 3 gallon biab after calibrating my equipment and so far it's going well. The grains have been mashing for 30min while I give the grains a stir every 10min and my brix reading is 12 which is slightly higher than what brewtarget estimated my pre-boil gravity to be using %70...

Getting poor efficiency, how to measure mash tun temperature

Ya I'm going to make sure my equipment is properly calibrated and use a glass thermometer I purchased from my LHBS. I'm also going to try a small 2-3Gallon BIAB and see what sort of efficiency I get.
