Question with a small yeast starter

I think 2 oz. DME works. It might be slightly short of the usual proportions. I've never figured out the weight to volume ratio of DME myself, but seen people say ~4 cups per pound. That would mean 1/2 cup (which is about what you need for 2+ cups) is roughly 2 oz.

    Yeast Starter Overflow

Looking for some thoughts/advice... I had a bit of an overflow in my starter while at work today. I'd say the puddle was about a quarter to a third of a cup, maybe a bit less. I'm sure there was some yeast carried out with the foam. Not sure if it was a lot or a little. Its a 2.3L starter...

How to Get a 1" Blow Off Tube to fit a 1.5" Hole

I do the same thing. Never had a problem.

Why shouldn't I use One Step Sanitizer?

I think some of the concern over one step comes from people who have used it as a "one step" cleaner and sanitizer. There has to be a rinse between the cleaning and the sanitizing, or else the initial debris that you were trying to clean is still in your container, which would inhibit good...

    Hop heads

I just cracked my first bottle of my hop head double from midwest last night. Still way too young (only 2.5 weeks in the bottle...I got impatient), but I got a sense of it. I wouldn't put it on the same page as the dogfish 90. Maybe halfway between the 60 and 90.

    Bottling Without Drying the Bottles

When I bottle, I clean the bottles and then soak them in starsan for a few minutes. Then I just dump the starsan out of all of them and fill/cap. Is there any disadvantage to this process as opposed to using a bottling tree to let them thoroughly dry?

    help with the math

Well...I guess you've exposed a flaw in me thinking I know what I'm talking about. I'm getting the ~1.075 boil gravity from the recipe's target OG. I'm not sure what the boil gravity is supposed to be for the partial boil. The fermentables are: 9.3 lbs. amber LME 8 oz. Crystal 50 8 oz. Brown...

    help with the math

Need a little help crunching the numbers here... I'm switching over from extract to all-grain, but I have one last extract kit sitting around that needs to be brewed. It's the Midwest Brewing Bourbon Barrel Ale. I have a shiny new 10-gallon kettle, so I want to try this one out as a full boil...

    Sanitizer in Starter

I was careless when shaking up my starter this morning and caused a little bit of diluted StarSan to backwash from the airlock into the starter wort (I'd estimate it was maybe half an ounce...about 1/4 of the volume of a 3-piece airlock). Can my yeasties live through this or will the sanitizer...

    Boil Time Question

Yeah, I had planned on that (thanks to ole John Palmer). I know to take the directions with a fair dose of salt, but it was that hop addition thing that was really puzzling me. Thanks for clearing that up.

    Boil Time Question

Yup. :drunk: That is exactly what I have (although, in fairness, I didn't realize that when I asked the question). Thanks for helping the noob.

    Boil Time Question

Got the kit from a place called "Beer and Wine Hobby" in Massachusetts (local but online). Its a "Premium Sam Adams Style Clone" with directions as follows: "Place grains into muslin bag and tie bag. Add 2 gallons of cold water to your brew pot, bring to a boil; remove from heat and add grain...

    Boil Time Question

I'm new to the forum and pretty new to brewing (getting ready to attempt my second batch). Forgive me in advance for asking what is probably a very dumb/simple question... I have a kit for a Sam Adams clone (chose it so I could compare it and get a sense of how I'm doing). The suggested...
