    Size matters??? Carboy question...

I will probably do some dry hopping for IPA's, but was not planning to use secondary fermentation for ales. I suppose really the 5 gallon carboys will serve my needs, which is to lager 5 gallon batches for my FIL, who drinks lagers and pilseners. As I mentioned above, my plan is to use...

    Size matters??? Carboy question...

Hello friends, A local seller is offering used 5 and 6 gallon carboys. My choice, $20 ea. I think I'll buy a couple and I want to know if a 6 gallon carboy would work for secondary fermenting of 5 gallon batches. This is my main use for carboys. Would I have oxidation issues? I...

Will it work? (try not to laugh)

@urg8rb8 @kh54s10 @Silver_Is_Money @imasickboy @brandonlovesbeer Thank you all for your help. This is a great forum with a lot of really helpful people! :) I thought about returning it, especially since a call to the local farm store reveals that a new one is on the shelf for $27, but I've...

Will it work? (try not to laugh)

So, now that I see that everyone is "motorizing" these things...it begs the question...exactly how many 5 gallon buckets of grain am I gonna have to grind to make a 5 gallon batch of beer?

Will it work? (try not to laugh)

It was $15. It's rusted but appears to have lots of life in it after a good cleanup. The Goodwill around here has meat grinders all the time, in fact has 4-5 of them right now...but this is the first time I saw a grain mill. There are a lot of Mennonites and Amish around here and they use...

Will it work? (try not to laugh)

I picked this up from the local Goodwill today, hoping to use it to mill grain. I don't plan on making batches bigger then 10 gallons (probably only 5 gal.). Goodwill accepts returns, so don't feel afraid to tell me if I chose poorly. :)

Mr Beer dilemma: A Tale of Three Cans...

"In a world of travail and cheap wine the ridiculous becomes sublime." -Ben Sidran I submit for your consideration these three vintage cans of Mr. Beer extract: They were given to me, all having "best-by" dates in 2012. They included three bags of petrified booster packets and...

Stoopid newb question...why do I need LME???

By water do you just mean using good quality water? I think I'm doing my sanitation right, but still have to work in temperature control. I have been buying bottled water for all my brewing... Ice Mountain Spring water to be exact. That's ok, right?

Stoopid newb question...why do I need LME???

@mongoose33 @rodwha @RM-MN Thanks! I have been watching some YT videos but would welcome your suggestions as to who has the best, most reliable teaching videos. Haven't found a local mentor yet, but hoping to.

Stoopid newb question...why do I need LME???

@Jtk78 @Sadu @r4dyce @rodwha @RM-MN @bajaedition @jrcrilly Thank you all for your very helpful replies. FYI part of my interest in DME is that my local retail carries many kinds of Briess DME and the prices are cheaper than what I see online. They carry NO LME at all. I think the reason may...

Stoopid newb question...why do I need LME???

I'm a total newb and so I have to ask this stoopid question... My local retailer sells Brewers Best kits and they all have a can of LME along with DME, specialty grains, hops, yeast, etc. The same seller also sells many kinds of bags of DME and bags of the specialty grains. What if I...

Newb questions...moving on from Mr. Beer...

I've been doing Mr. Beer extracts since Febr. I'm ready to move on to 5 gallon batches (or just maybe bigger). I think I'm going to go to Brewer's Best partial extract kits because a local shop has them at reasonable prices. They also sell Fastfermenters in stock (5 gallon ones). I may go to...
