    Counterflow chiller question

An efficient CFC should be able to get the wort to within 2° of whatever your tap water temperature is in a single pass. In the wintertime, I have to throttle my water way back or else I'd have 50° wort. In the summertime, I go full blast with the water and throttle the wort flow back a little...

90% mash efficiency on newHERMS system a fluke?

A 75% mash efficiency is pretty poor, I would think. A 75% brewhouse efficiency is about average. I usually get around 85% brewhouse efficiency with my system, but sometimes I hit 90%. I use a HERMS and fly sparge, but I don't increase the temps for mashout. Fly sparging rate very much...

    Help me solve a mystery!

Freaking beer gnomes, man. They get a lot of my beer, too.

Maximum grain bill in my mash tun

No, you can't do that. The wort from the different tuns would not speak the same language once they got into the boil kettle and then they'd constantly fight. And then the yeast would get in there and the two wort tribes would demand that the yeast pick a side and the yeast would be all, "but...

    30A Switch?

Kal uses 10a switches to control contactors, which control the flow of larger amperage circuits. Contactors are useful for this very purpose. There's an electrical coil that uses a small amount of electricity to physically connect and disconnect one side of a larger electrical circuit to...

Concord pots - flat lid vs domed?

One version has handles that allow the lid to be hung on them. The other does not. If the handles on the lid are arched, they're not going to sit on the side handles.

Does anyone else find Beersmith clunky?

I'm currently trying out Brewer's Friend's online cloud-based version to see how it differs from BeerSmith. Pros (so far): * Has a cloud-based inventory system so you can see what you're low on when you're standing there in the LHBS * Cheaper than BeerSmith Cons (so far): * No field for...

    Dreaming of that upgrade...

If you don't have enough money for the SS Perlicks, just save your money until you do and go with picnic taps.

Ball valve and sight glass installation and

Well...you could make a rubber plug for the top of your sight glass when you're draining from the valve. The sight glass will be useless for reading volumes as you're draining, but that shouldn't be a problem.

    Vanilla Beans

I typically use 3 beans for a 5 gallon batch and that gives a nice vanilla presence but is definitely not overpowering. So one bean for 2 gallons wouldn't be over-doing it in my opinion.

    HERMS Design Advice

It's hard to find the question or questions. Normally one uses a question mark for that kind of thing. Rotation of the recirculating wort isn't a thing, as far as I know. It may rotate up top but I don't think people are doing it in order to gain some kind of advantage over non-rotational...

Does anyone else find Beersmith clunky?

Eh. It's not the worst program I've ever used by far. I've gotten used to it. I know where the information I'm looking for is. Still waiting for the mobile app to get an active inventory thing going so I know what I need to buy at the LHBS by looking at my phone...

Nothing wrong with storing grain in a rubber-maid is there?

No. It's a dry grain. It's not going to leach anything.

    Bulk base grain suggestion

I use 2-row for about 90% of my beers as a base. Unmilled grains can be stored for a year or two if they're put in a cool dry place inside of a sealed container.

    B. Nektar Dude's Rug: Cider with chai

It's definitely a cider, not a mead. But the confusion is not surprising since B. Nektar is primarily thought of as a meadery. It is an excellent cider. Love the stuff. I think I'll have to try to make some myself.

    Serious Efficency Problems

1.058 was your pre-boil specific gravity. What was your pre-boil volume before you added 3 more liters? Grains absorb about .5 liters of wort per pound of grain.

I'm out of space - what are my options?

Sell the baby, the sooner the better, before you get too attached. Then use that money to buy more brewing equipment. Oh, wait. I think I read that it's illegal to sell your kids now. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably move to a smaller batch setup. You're not going to have a lot of time...

    Serious Efficency Problems

It's all about the gravity units (GU's). If you hit your pre-boil SG but were low on volume, then you can have less beer with the right OG or your can have the right amount of beer with a lesser OG. What was the pre-boil volume that you added 3L to?

    Mashtun: Leftover Grain Transport

I found a short plastic trash can that's a little shorter than my brew stand, so at the end of the mash I tilt my 25g mash tun on its side and use a big steel spoon to scoop out the grains into the trash can. Then I carry the trash can to the back yard and dump the grains along the back fence...
