first runnings iipa & session ipa recipe critique please

Thank you beerme. Now to figure out my hop schedule. Any suggestions? It'll be difficult to get work done today with hop schedules floating through my head.

    Craft Beer MAW(Easy Version)

Ok, will jump in after I become eligible.

first runnings iipa & session ipa recipe critique please

That sounds like a great idea! I've been looking for info on the first runnings not having good fermentability and can't find much at all. All I could find was this that said water to grain ratio did not have an impact on the fermentability of the wort...

    Craft Beer MAW(Easy Version)

Only been a member a couple months and only have 40 some posts but mind if I take this? I'm from IA, not a whole lot here that is specific to the breweries you mentioned. There's a sour orange hot pepper beer from c.i.b. that is definitely interesting & better than it sounds (if I can still...

first runnings iipa & session ipa recipe critique please

Can you explain first about the most rich (I assume rich in sugar) wort being least fermentable? Do the second runnings lend different characteristics to the beer that would make it not a suitable choice for a session ipa? Would adding dextrose make a difference if I don't hit the right...

Those who've moved from bottling to kegging - warm/cold conditioning time questions

I'm sorry if this takes the thread off topic but why keg condition? Are there any advantages over simply hooking the beer up to CO2 at the desired pressure (other than not having an available slot on the distributor)?

first runnings iipa & session ipa recipe critique please

Greetings! Just heard word from a brew friend. He's asked me to house sit this weekend and offered to let me brew at his place (I have two stouts currently fermenting which is my max capacity). I would never say no to brewing more beer and thought it'd be fun to combine our equipment to brew...

    Mash tun size

I believe he says the grain bed should be at least /2 the height of the diameter... so >8 inches of grain. Look into the volume and see if you'll get what you need.

    Mash tun size

http://www.howtobrew.com/section3/chapter17-2.html Check out this link for some info. Edit, I think I meant to post this link http://www.howtobrew.com/appendices/appendixD-1.html Sounds like you already read it, but use the calculations to figure out the minimum height required of your grain.

Anyone else start a brew day and realize you are missing stuff...so it's a quick chan

+1 on learning with every brew. I bought a false bottom for my boil kettle that I wanted to use only to find I left it at the office. Driving across town the morning of a big 10 football game when I should have been enjoying the day was frustrating. On the latest brew, 1/2 way through the...

    Crazy fermentation and blowoff

Looks good to me! Check on it every so often to make sure the hose doesn't clog.

    do i need to secondary

According to Palmer, a secondary can help if you're dry hopping ipa style beers (in addition to what others have said). As a beginner, don't worry about transfering to a secondary. If you have access to CO2 and can sanitize competently, go ahead! I use secondaries for ipas and my big beers...

    Confused about vanilla bean

Correct. Don't worry about it. I read somewhere how much alcohol was needed to make an impact, can't find it at the moment but the ~6 oz you'd be adding would have a minimal affect on your fg.

    Confused about vanilla bean

I starSan the knife and cutting board along with the outside of the beans. You probably don't need to but I have a spray bottle pre mixed and it's easy to do. I also boil the mason jar that I use to soak the beams (SO uses the jars for juicing and I want to make sure they're not going to have...

    Cherry Almond Sauce in beer?

That might only be an issue if you bottle condition (referring to adding it in the secondary ). If you do bottle condition you could bottle off all but a gallon then add a small amount and see how that last gallon conditions.

    Cheers!

    What are you drinking now?

It happens. Slowed down the brew process but made my half day off work enjoyable.

    What are you drinking now?

Started with a founders BIPA, then to a 2 hearted, then to a Rampant, then back to the BIPA, and now on a lagunitas imperial red. 30 min left in the boil.
