What's your go-to brand for wine kits?

I've only used wine expert but have had amazing results from their kits. My LHBS owner told me that they have a guarantee on their kits that if it doesn't turn out well they'll replace it. I was looking on their website but couldn't find anything. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

    Cleaning/Drying tubing

Just brewed my first Berliner weisse...should I get new tubing so as to not worry about lacto contamination? I figure it's so cheap...do it just to be safe

Thinking about a Marris Otter SMASH... Hops ideas?

I did a SMASH with Marris Otter and Brambling Cross hops a couple weeks back and it turned out to be a pretty good combo. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Make sure to get a picture up to if you're able!

How long do I have to keep the fermentation?

Thanks for the feedback schokie. It's only been a week so far but I'm going to take a gravity reading tomorrow and see how it's coming along. It's an imperial red rye ale that I'm making for a homebrew comp in March. I'm about to start a Belgian strong myself! What ABV would one want to...

How long do I have to keep the fermentation?

Quick follow up question for this topic...I'm brewing an ale with an estimated abv of above 8%. What is a generous range of time that fermentation should be complete for primary? Looking back at how I worded this question I feel like Yoda...

Smoke n Salt - Brown Ale AG Recipe

Not a terrible amount of expertise on smoked malt but I had a friend of mine who made a soft pretzel beer and added salted soft pretzels in the mash, then added more salt...it was absolutely amazing. I was impressed at the characteristic that salt brought out of the beer. Good luck and let us...

How do you label your bottles?

I try and use different bottle caps (colors, runoffs, anything to differentiate). Def don't put a label on there if you don't want to clean them again! The stickers should work well. I've also found that metallic sharpies work really well to write on glass and metal.

How likely is a "bottle day" infection?

I have only had a few bottles that seemed to be infected. Similarly to Captwalt I've had to fill a couple not properly sanitized bottles and have had little problems from those. Does this question come from a few experiences of of infected brews or simply curiosity?

Please give feedback on my 1st recipe!!!

I just keep it simple with a 1:2 ratio of DME and water. Make sure you boil at least ten min. Sanitize the yeast vial bc one time I dropped it in the wort...thankfully it didn't contaminate my starter. If you don't have a stir plate make sure you give it a good shake bc the yeast can cake on...

Do You Cook With Your Homebrew???

Haha! I made an amber cream ale about two months ago and apparently didn't clean out my keg properly...have I still been drinking the beer? YES! Also, it has a nice funky tang to it so I made some beef stew with brisket the other day. Cooked it for about six hours using homemade beef broth...

    IPA contaminated?

Good luck Rel and post a pic of the beer once it's finished. I just made a porter that did something similar and I think the yeast was just supper excited!

    Chilling Wort

What I used to do when I was working with extract was to do a 2.5 gallon batch and poor it over a bag of ice. That way you know the ice is sanitized as well. If you make 5 gal batches it might be worth it to make one yourself...
