    The infection is -IN- me!!

Around here if you take your own bottles in you dump them in a huge bin, and there's no attendant right there. Breakage common. Even I don't want to hang into that bin, and I'm usually the guy in the group who will try the crazy thing.

    Off-flavors

So can this be rejuvenated? I racked it off the sliced oranges at day 17, and on day 30 racked onto the fruit / peppers. That was 3 days ago, and I have had to change the airlock twice since then - Seems to be waking up. Should I crash this / stop the yeast / resweeten? Is it just $hi# and I...

    The infection is -IN- me!!

Yeah, I did buy the burner so I can do just the boiling / stinky part out in the garage (door up a bit and a fan going) because my wife can even smell my evil thoughts. Speaking of bottles, anyone had luck mooching empties from local pubberies? Gonna need a ####load soon.

    The infection is -IN- me!!

Tell me if I'm right. Am I infected? I am brand new to brewing, haven't even bottled anything yet, much in the works. In primary: Irish Red Ale, American Cream Ale, California Common, White House Honey Ale and a Show Mead. In secondary: English Brown Ale and a Mixed Berry Serrano Mead...

    Off-flavors

Maybe I'll just need to sweeten on the back end. Plan is to do nothing until I do some more reading. Anybody got a source of info about the off-flavors?

    10 1-gallon meads

It's a grommet you can get at any brew store for 40 or 50 cents.

    Off-flavors

Lalvin D-47. LHBS guy suggested it, and it seemed to be an upgrade of sorts at the time. Not so?

    Off-flavors

I found a reference on the beer side of the site to off flavors and their likely causes, e.g., "wet cardboard taste is almost certainly due to oxidation." Is anyone aware of a similar reference for meads or wines? My first JAOM + oranges was unpleasant when I racked the other day, but as...

    10 1-gallon meads

That price is awesome! On the subject of the gallon jug method: I did not find a balloon that would fit a wide opening and not fatigue / eventually fail. My solution - to cut a grommet hole with an exacto in the cap and drop an airlock in. Working perfectly.

Airlock still busy at 16 days

If I had -anything- in a bottle that didn't come from the beer store, waiting would be easier!

Airlock still busy at 16 days

Thanx for the input. I popped the top and I'm at 1.021, so I covered it back up. Now I just have to be patient. That's the hardest part!

Airlock still busy at 16 days

Wondering if this is normal activity or suspicious for some other gas producing organism. it's a 5 gallon batch with 15 lbs honey, 2 pkts of D-47 and energizer / nutrient to start. On day 4 added 1.5 tsp nutrient / energizer. Have not messed with it otherwise. Airlock popping every 4-5...

    She's gonna blow!!

English brown ale 16 hrs after pitching. Looks like it is gonna do this for a while, so I cleaned up the airlock with StarSan and put it back on empty. That way it won't suck the sanitizer back in if I have to pull the airlock again. Home all day, so I'll be watching for it plugging up.

Show us your Mead in a photo!!!

This is my very first batch. No- boil, Semi-sweet, made with D-47 and a sliced orange. Starting to clear nicely after a month. Note the cheap bastard setup. If you carefully cut the hole, a grommet fits in the cap, and with the bubbler this fermenter cost me about $2.50 including the...

    California Common question

Started a (5 gal) batch today. Used two smack packs of Wyeast 2124, pitched at 69 degrees, 1.046. It's parked at room temp now and is starting to perk at 4 hours. Great. The question is this: The California Common can ferment at ale temps, but with this lager yeast does colder = better...

    Game of Thrones Mead

Dissolve first, eh? Cool. The guy at the LHBS says toss these in there, so I did. He may have assumed I'd know to do that. Not. I'll try that next time. Thanx!!

    Game of Thrones Mead

And when you feed it, do it in a sink or tub. Did this for the first time recently, and it generated a -LOT- of foam very quickly, and well, that area tug needed washing anyway.

    Lead-free marbles?

Thanx all, and Fatbloke the topping off options are the answer to another of the many questions I have. Very cool. I'm not going to dump my very first batch. No way! It's just that I remembered someone specifying "lead free" was the thing to use. Anyway, ay my local grocer I found spring...
