Help! I am fermenting in my 5 gal carboy...

Yep blowoff tube. Better do something quick
  2. clemson51

    Blow out!!

I'm the opposite, I only have a blow off tube cap for my fermenter. I'm lazy and don't want to have to clean that up so I never even bought a air lock.

    infection advice

Wow, I would also like to know how this turns out.

    Heat wave!

It is 4 days shipping from AHS to SC so figured that played a role I made starters but no luck. I think I'll just start picking up from my lhbs in the summer. 40 minute drive but could be worse. I'm hoping this amber ale turns out ok. I had to use a Belgian dry yeast safbrew t58 instead of...

    Heat wave!

Well my replacement pack of wyeast didn't survive the trip either. I just pitched some dry yeast that I had left over so hopefully I can save this batch. Lesson learned... Use dry yeast in the summer heat.

    What time do you brew?

Saturday morning early. Gives you more reasons to look forward to the weekend when time comes to pop one open.

    Heat wave!

More wyeast on the way bc first pack got killed in delivery. If this free replacement doesn't survive the trip I'm switching to dry yeast. Keeping fingers crossed.

    Lager not Fermenting?

I agree looks exactly like it should.

    Heat wave!

I just experienced the same thing this past week except mine did die in the heat I assume bc it never inflated and showed no signs of activity when pitched. I learned the hard way to always have some dry yeast on hand.

    First Brew

Yeah I would think one week in fermenter is not long enough. I have learned that kit instructions are designed to get you beer as quick as possible. However it may be drinkable at the time table they give you, it will be much better the longer you wait.

    First Brew

If you followed the kit directions it is hard not to hit the correct gravity readings. Just curious, you said you removed the krausen layer and put lid back on? What for? Generally speaking u don't want to open the bucket while fermenting for risk of contamination. I'm still a beginner...

    Second batch

The witbier was a Midwest kit and amber is a Austin home brew kit.

    Second batch

Just finished up my second batch of extract brew and it's crazy how much I learned from the first batch to the second...I'm sure each batch will be a learning experience. My first batch didn't turn out as well as expected probably because when I steeped my grains I didn't lift them in and out...

    Beer color is off?

Ok so if I up my boil size I should get better hop utilization if I understand correctly? I have a 7.5 gallon pot but recipe calls for a 3 gallon boil. I might up it to 4 just to see how it turns out. Thanks

    Beer color is off?

Recently brewed the Midwest supplies extract kit for Belgian witbier and it came out much darker than expected. It looks like a pale ale after 5 weeks in bottle. I followed directions like instructed and added all the wheat extract at beginning of boil. I will be brewing an amber ale this...

    First batch color

I have had this same issue with a Belgian wit extract kit. It came out almost looking like a brown ale. So I am going to try splitting up the extract addition as suggested. My next extract kit is actually a pale ale so hopefully I can hit the correct color this time.

    What are you drinking now?

Rj rockers patriot pale ale! The best.
  18. clemson51

    should i bottle today?

You will need to take a hydrometer reading to see for sure if it is time to bottle. If u do not have one I would wait at least 2 weeks before bottling.

    Overcarbed brew from local microbrewery

New pint glass on the way to me! Thanks for the advice to let them know.

    Overcarbed brew from local microbrewery

I have only been drinking craft beers for about 4 months and noticed that the last 6 pack I bought from a local microbrewery in SC was over carbonated and had lots of yeast particles floating in the beer. It was a brown ale and I have never noticed this before when I bought this beer. When I...
