    Pale/Vienna Lager

Assuming a 5 gallon batch, I have your bitterness ratio just above 0.5. (IBU/SG) I would consider that OK, but a little low for a "Vienna Lager." This will be too strong and way too light colored for a Vienna lager. But you don't seem to be targeting a specific style, just using the ingredients...

Does Mashing Specialty Malts Result in a Higher OG?

Chapter 12 in John Palmer's book "How to Brew" is titled "Understanding Malted Barley and Adjuncts." The first edition is available to read free on-line here. Welcome to How to Brew - How to Brew This may answer some of your questions.

    Glycol Temp Control Set Up

The attached link takes me to a 10" coil. My problem is the opening on my 30L Speidel is 4 7/8". Which size Speidel are you using? Or did you use the 3/8" diameter tubing coiled to 4" that's on the Stainless Brewing website?

    Blichmann BrewEasy

I have the 5 gallon electric BE. I was also concerned about inadvertently dropping the level below the heating coil. The level column works well but I needed a bigger visual impact to alert the level is too low. On the boil kettle, blue painter's tape was applied next to the level column at...

    Final Gravity is consistently high

My understanding is that once fermentation begins, alcohol will distort the calibration of a refractometer. I use a hydrometer for all measurements after pitching the yeast.

    Wyeast 1450 (Denny's 50) or Wyeast 1187 (Ringwood)?

Why not split the batch and try both yeasts and decide which you like best? I used to brew with Ringwood a lot, but many seem to shy away from it. The Ringwood yeast has a fast-attenuating yeast and a fast-flocculating yeast. However, it is sensitive to its environment, so proper control is a...

    Road trip to Hilton Head

The newest place is Southern Barrel in Bluffton. I was there last week. The beers were well made, but could have used a bit more hop flavor, IMO. And I am not considered a "hophead." There is also Riverdog in Okatie, but I have not been there.

whats a good, inexpensive induction plate

I have this one ^ too. I would suggest the 240V version as shown, vs. 120V. Type "induction" in the search bar. There is a bunch of great info. on these threads.

Forgot to do a protein rest for Witbier

Since the style is supposed to be somewhat cloudy, I do not use a protein rest for my Wits. My grainbill and mash schedule is similar to what you listed. I also think your Wit will be fine, assuming you have your spices to your taste. Maybe its because I fly sparge, but I do not experience...

    Water additions for dummies

I'll add kudos to Great Fermentations. They have been very helpful to me. Wish they were closer. My experience is using RO water does makes the process more simple, and a certain amount of confidence that, at a minimum, you're not too far off. To the original question, in my experience yes...

    MoreBeer kettle and induction cooktop

There's a thread discussing this topic started by geoffm33. For some reason, this site's search feature isn't working well for me this morning, or I could provide a link. But you should find it. There's a wealth of information in it. I bought a 3500 W, 240V induction cooktop, and can verify...

    Request for Induction Equipment Information

I've enjoyed readind all the posts in this thread. Thanks to all contributors. It seems as the most popular induction-ready kettle is the Bayou Classic. Others use the NB Megapot, MB Heavy-Duty, or Concord. Have I missed any? Does anyone use the Ss Brew Tech kettles? I saw the recent Giveaway...

    Thermocouple leads

No, I would add quick-disconnects for at least the two using thermal heads, and probably the third as well. They shouldn't be too expensive. I agree with you the idea of disconnecting wires for every cleaning isn't good practice. I was just warning that the right disconnect has to be used for...

    Thermocouple leads

If you are new to using thermocouples, keep the entire circuit, from the t/c back to the measuring circuit, compatible with the type t/c. So the type K wires are yellow and red with a yellow overall jacket. The type J wires are white and red with a black overall jacket. This is important as any...

    Mixing beers vs averaging recipes

I understand Newcastle blends their brown ale. If that's true, it seems that there must a difference, otherwise they would make only one recipe. But I do like the idea of experiementing and discovering the difference on my system.
