    Separated/Divided wort

Maybe temperature stratification? I had something like this happen a couple years ago, don't remember much about it other.than it looked cool.

    Lets talk about effiency..

Whoops, usually I mean mash efficiency, guess I need to get on board. Edit: because I feel like there are a lot of different variables on brew house eff. How much trub your grain bill gives, how much you leave in the kettle, how much you lose to chillers, how well your yeast compacts, etc...

    Prioritizing Purchases

Also, I don't know what your budget is, but I've seen pretty decent reviews on the Darkstar burner on northernbrewer.com and it's about $50. NB frequently does sales that include it. The one I'm using though, is a $40 one from academy sports and outdoors. I have the clean the burner by...

    Prioritizing Purchases

I think i made my immersion chiller for about $25-30 with 25 feet of copper from Lowe's or home depot. an old washing machine hose s silicone hose and 2 hose clamps.

    Kettle etching increments

Has anyone tried to use this DIY for kettle etching? It includes a 9v battery and some vinegar. https://byo.com/stories/issue/item/3113-etch-your-kettle-projects I'm going to try this on my next day off as I have everything required (as most people probably do). I was curious if anyone had...

    First Batch Double Check

Slightly off topic: I've been using fermcap in my boils as I originally used a 7.5 gallon turkey fryer pot and my krausen isn't nearly as big now. I haven't used a blow off set up in several batches. I also have a fermentation fridge so temps don't ever get crazy fwiw.

    My first brew progress ??

Here is a picture of my old original setup. I was able to fit 3 kegs on the bottom and the co2 on that top shelf. And this one is my current setup. It easily fits 4 and that all the taps I have also. When I buy a house next year I will do a keezer build so I can have 6-8. Why they are...

    My first brew progress ??

There are priming sugar calculators online to determine how much of that 5oz pack you want to use. When I used to bottle I don't ever remember getting overcarbonated bottles using the whole bag though. This hobby can truly be as expensive or as frugal as you want it to be. I usually...

    My first brew progress ??

Guess my wife is right amd im not as funny as i think i am. Lighten up man, you're making beer! I made some contribution above. Make sure you weigh and not volume measure your priming sugar. Sugar density can vary and "just under 2/3 C" may not always be the same thing.

    My first brew progress ??

I'll need to see some pics before I give feedback on tights.

Day 7 of my first brew

If you use PayPal it comes straight out of your account and you only need username and password. Usually take a day or two to show on on the account too :) With that said, I'm just now getting to the point where the wiggle room in our budget is a bit more tolerant of my impulse buys. The...

Day 7 of my first brew

Great reason to start kegging! Right now I have a 4 tap setup with a total of 6 kegs so I can have some ready to go when one kicks.

Day 7 of my first brew

I usually leave em in the primary for a few weeks for multiple reasons. 1) I'm lazy/busy. 2) I cold crash, so after a couple weeks I put the carboy in the fridge for 2 or 3 days. Pull the carboy out to where I will keg/bottle it and try to have it done the next day or two after it settles...

    Noob Question

****, I just lick the thermometer between mashing and cooling.

    Noob Question

It's windy and I'm a smoker! For now, been off and on for a few years now. Sheesh it's hard to kick

    Noob Question

I frequently get cigarette ash and leaves in my cooling wort. Not usually an issue. Even kids dirty mits "helping" out. Pitch a good out of yeast and I think it's pretty hard to mess up.

    Noob Question

It will get in there after a few minutes / couple of hours. I think manufacturers usually advise against mixing and just sprinkling when using straight dry yeast, iirc I wouldn't sweat the paper towel. Look into rehydrating yeast for optimum yeast performance.
