First time saving and also doing a yeast starter

1 cup of slurry is usually enough for your next pitch. There are calculators online but I've always seen 1 cup as a reference. You could also harvest yeast cells from your starter. You'd only need to brew a starter with an extra 500 mL, if possible, and save the extra 500 mL for future...

Modern Homebrew Recipes: Exploring Styles and Contemporary Techniques - Gordon Strong

I brewed the australian ale and it came out great. Different yeast and surprising the hop flavor wasn't as strong as I expected. I think the mixture of malts was a good learning lesson.

New or upgrade Equipment upgrade suggestions

I'd go with a stir plate and starter setup. You can make one for pretty cheap if you check the DIY thread. It's a computer fan and an old phone charger. Compared to buying one locally you'll have extra cash in hand to buy a 5 L flask.

    Yeast starter questions

Adnrew do the math on building up starters to 1 gallon and buying more yeast. Also realize if you're considering building a starter, decanting and adding more wort you won't be growing as many cells as most calculators online say you will. You'll be adding wort to a larger density of cells and...

I add mine prior to mashing. Check out BruNWater and you'll be on your way to greatness. Search for it here and youtube and you'll be on your way. It's an excel spreadsheet.

    Slow fermentation

Did you ever check final gravity? Did you add more yeast? If it was as much yeast as you're claiming and nothing else was changed it would be shocking to know the yeast was acting so different from a second fermentation.

I like this time at night on HBT

You know that time when you know you realize you don't have to drive to work tomorrow? The time when you realize that you want to say something but not offended anyone? Then you remember this section? Then you realize you understand this so you decide it is time to go to bed? Yeah it is like...

Chugger Pump Modular Waterproof GFCI Box

@Taquina what you're looking for is here. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=598063 This might help you. For the photos, just look at a brand new outlet. On the side you'll see the tab he is talking about. It's just like wiring a half hot but in this case you'd have two switches...

DIY Dual Chugger Pump Switch Box

I did something similar for my pump setup however instead of cutting off the end of the pump cord I built an outlet controlled by a switch. I plug the outlet into my wall to give it power and plug the pump into the outlet. It achieves the same outcome as this project I just didn't want to cut...

Actual Cost Savings of AG over Extract

Damn. Id be using pilsner malt for a LOT of brews. If they will let you use their mill I'd buy a sack of grain, a pound of hops and a vial of yeast and make 20 gallons of beer PDQ. You'd get a lot of learning from brewing four batches of all grain and you'd know in a short amount of time if it's...

Actual Cost Savings of AG over Extract

How are you going to mill the grain? LHBS allow you to buy in bulk and use their mill? If so this is great. If you don't have a way to mill the grain you'll have to factor in the price of your mill into your equipment costs. Side note: AWESOME prices for extract AND base malt. If you can find...

Actual Cost Savings of AG over Extract

Eh, I think it's the cost of grain vs malt extract leading the comparison. The only thing you gain from BIAB vs igloo cooler setup is the time it takes to get your return on investment back. A grain bag is a few bucks. A coole, screen, ball valve and fittings take longer. Pilsner recipe from...

Actual Cost Savings of AG over Extract

To add to this I'd say find out what expensive base malt costs (Golden Promise, Vienna, Munich, Marris Otter) and how much you'd need for a 1.050 beer and compare it to what you'd spend in malt extract. My local shop is around $2-2.50/lb for this stuff. If plane 2-row is all you'd replace your...
