HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

New guy with a RPI I'm trying to setup with BrewPi for fermentation. I'll admit I know NOTHING about programming. I'm the guy who buys the parts and needs the simplest explanation and if it doesn't work by copy/paste I'm lost. I installed Raspian using NOOBS and have wifi up and running. I...

Using old grain for yeast starters

    Damn typos. 10 ounces.

    All-Grain equipment recommendation

I’d go look at the robo and grain father. Guys in my club are into their grain father $1,000 but they can control it from their home and be at strike temp when they wake up which saves a few hours of brewing. They’re also getting some great efficiencies too. Storage is easier than a Rubbermaid...

Using old grain for yeast starters

I made my first “all grain” starter a few days ago. 0 ounces was perfect for a 1.5 liter starter with brew in a bag stove top cooking making it pretty easy. I might never buy extract again.

    First yeast cake pitch

If you add more sugar and the yeast chew through 1.030 to 1.020 in the bottle you’ll over carbonate your beer. If the yeast doesn’t eat any of the 1.030 sugars, assuming they’re unfermentable, you’ll be fine. Edit: on a 5% beer I’m a little surprised it has stopped so high. You’d have a LOT of...

    Yeast starter temp?

You don't need to make a starter for US-05. There is more yeast in there than a liquid pack.

What I did for beer today

Made an all grain yeast starter (10 ounces pale malt) with some yeast I've kept under beer since about November or maybe January. Cleaned a mini keg I borrowed from a club member for a 1 gallon batch. Entered my Celebration Ale Clone recipe from BYO into beer smith. I should really clean the...

Help me figure out my next brew setup

If you want brew in a bag simplicity with the ability to wake up to mash temps just buy a grainfather, or similar, setup. Buy once cry once. You have less to assemble on brew day than having a heat stick, temp probe, mash controller, pump etc. and you’ll have everything you want. If these setups...

    Question about yeast starters...

Also, having a ton of hops has nothing to do with blowoff.

Fermenting for Distillation versus Beer - Yeast Amount Differences

Probably because the alcohol content is higher so it will mask off flavors and you’ll evaporate them isn’t guess.

    Bru'n water question

If you test each brew day you’ll have the information you’ll need. I tested my water Saturday before a brew day and added my salts accordingly. After a while I find out what I typically use and buy accordingly. I don’t need lots of chalk or even Epsom salts. I really only need some calcium and...

    Any downside to swingtop/Grolsch-style bottles?

They hold pressure fine, they last a long time, they’re no comparison for legging for simplicity, and they suck to give away because you probably won’t get it back.

BYO Digital subscription? Where be all the articles n' stuff??

I received an email telling me I was switched. My membership expires in March so without the print issue going to a family member I’ll probably cancel. Since the app doesn’t ever just remember my login details I will either have to make it simple for family to read or just go with AHA and send...

    Bru'n water question

Test it before each brew day. I bought an exact iDip test kit for this reason.

    Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

I brewed up the 2003 Zymurgy recipe last week and just kegged it. Well, not the EXACT recipe since I substituted for some stuff because I didn't have carafoam on hand and a 10 gallon batch wouldn't work with the exact recipe but close. I'm looking forward to tasting it in a few days and seeing...

    Bulk hops storage.

Add me to the "Food Saver and Mason Jar" crowd. I sometimes split them between two pint jars if it is something I don't use a lot of like Warrior. It makes me feel like half of the hops will last longer and won't be exposed to oxygen when I open the jar for 1 ounce. They don't take much more...

Stuck Sparge - Round Cooler With False Bottom

Figure this out yet? It's possible the weight of the grain and water was too much for the false bottom and it collapsed so the little bit of wort you saw was all it could hold in the center. The tube from the false bottom to the valve could have been pinched off and allowed air but not much...
