Would you buy "Box Subscription" for homebrewing?

The only way I would buy this would be semi-annually, and it would have to be so dirt cheap that I couldn't pass it up. For example, I would be willing to spend $20 a year to get two kits. I would try to get my homebrew club involved so that several of us would brew the same recipe and...

Looking for input on a "New World" Pilsner recipe

Have you brewed with Sorachi Ace before? It's a weird hop, in my experience. I used it a couple times and it always gave a strange dill flavor to the beer. Maybe it comes through when too much is used or combined with other hops or yeasts, so maybe in lower percentages it will be ok. If you...

    Temperature Controller for Fermentation Chamber

You can tape the sensor to the side of your carboy, then insulate it with bubble wrap so that it doesn't get affected by the ambient temps inside the freezer. The only temperature that matters is the temperature of your beer, and taping the sensor to the outside will read within 1° of the beer...

    Hydrometer help?

+1... I see 1.042 and definitely correct for temp. Remember to read from the bottom of the meniscus and you'll be golden. Also, your hydrometer will say what temperature it is calibrated to somewhere on it. Mine is 5 years old and is calibrated to 60°F, but all the new ones I've seen are...

Higher than expected FG (1.041 vs 1.018)

The guides you've seen with Erlenmeyer flasks and stir plates should get you 90% of the info you need. This article should give you the step-by-step for using other containers.

    Too many hops

Oh man, I totally know where you're coming from, OP! You spent hours making this batch and you're invested. Don't let the investment cloud your judgement! I've tried to save a few bad batches, and it never makes a great beer. It might make it slightly better, but never good. If I were you, I...

    South Orange County

Hey guys, I'm super late to this thread, but we started a club in San Clemente called "Immersion Chillers". We meet at Pizza Port every second Thursday of the month at 6:30pm. Drop me a line at our website or on the Facebook page to be added to the email list. What's even cooler is that...

Anyone try the hop burst recipe from this month's zymurgy?

@ScottWa, I brewed Mitch Steele's Hop Burst IPA recipe from Zymurgy magazine. It's already gone, and I miss it! Haha! I used a hop bag one time a couple years ago, and had the same experience as you. I'm sure adding more hops would counteract the effect, but that just adds more cost when I...

Anyone try the hop burst recipe from this month's zymurgy?

Just brewed this a month ago, and it is easily the best IPA I've ever made. Mitch knows what he's talking about. If you've ever had any of the Stone Enjoy By series, this is very similar to that without as much alcohol. I highly recommend you try this recipe. If you like modern hoppy IPAs, then...

Using milk to stick on labels?

Yeah, just a little contact with the milk will be plenty. I've also noticed that wider labels (ones the wrap further around the bottle) are more prone to wrinkles, so I use even less milk on those. Well, I try to use less milk, but I am usually enjoying a homebrew at the time, and we know how...

Using milk to stick on labels?

I don't have the space in my fridge for all the bottles, so I only refrigerate a couple at a time to have ready to drink. The rest just sit in boxes at room temperature without any problems.

    Show Us Your Label

Thanks! I was hoping that would come across. :)

Using milk to stick on labels?

I made a quick video of how I use this method. It's worked really well for me. I used non-fat milk, and no brush. http://youtu.be/II37YITuuNU

    Question About Cooling

Yes, you're correct on the first one about IPA (India Pale Ale) and the hops being a great preservative. But the Imperial Pale Ale is not the same as IPA. Imperial means a special variety of a certain style. Many styles have been made into an imperial version: Imperial Stout, Imperial Belgian...
