    WLP820 - Should I avoid?

I'm planning a 1.056 OG Munich lager in the coming weeks and I'm trying to decide on which yeast to use. The WLP820 (Oktoberfest/Märzen lager yeast) sounds like a good choice for the style, but I've read a few posts on various forums with people that have had bad luck the strain. Based on their...

    Techniques for Late Hop Additions?

I've been reading up on some different hop techniques. One of the methods that has caught my attention the most is delaying hop additions (even bittering hops) until later in the boil to improve hop aroma. I've been tweaking a Rye IPA recipe of mine that I've been really interested in trying...

Black Stuff Floating Around Yeast Starter

That's a good point. I heated it in a pot, but I might have transfered some into the flask without realizing it.

Black Stuff Floating Around Yeast Starter

I made a yeast starter about 24 hours ago and went to check on it to find black chunks of something floating around in it. I've never noticed this before. I sanitized all equipment (including the stir bar) prior to use, so I don't know how I could have gotten an infection, but I'm probably...

    Boilermaker Dip Tube is Stuck

Figured it out. Thank you very much!

    Boilermaker Dip Tube is Stuck

I just bought a new Blichmann Boilermaker (10 gallon), installed the HopBlocker and brewed my first batch with the new kettle. For whatever reason, I now can't get the dip tube back off to remove the HopBlocker. Like I said, I just bought the equipment, so maybe I'm doing something wrong, but...

I made an Irish Red....monkey beer?

I recently brewed an Irish Red with an OG of 1.056 using WLP004. I had pretty high hopes for this beer because it tasted great before I primed it with 2.5 oz of priming sugar for a 2.5 gallon batch. Admittedly, I only waited 10 days before cracking the first bottle open, but it now has a very...

First AG Brew this Sat. Wish me luck!!

It wasn't too bad, but I had a little too much Crystal 60 and it ended up a little sweeter on the back end than I had aimed for. I also changed the hop character a bit (went from Willamette to Centennial hoping to give slightly less aroma, but hopefully a little more bitterness). I word for...

First AG Brew this Sat. Wish me luck!!

I did an Imperial Rye PA a few weeks ago and had almost the exact same results (I'm also very new to AG). I bought some equipment to fly sparge a couple nights ago then did a very similar recipe last night (tweaked my original for taste) and ended up with a brewhouse efficiency of around 75%. I...

    Confusion about Yield

Good point...that would explain why it's more expensive where I've looked for it.

    Confusion about Yield

So, I have absolutely no idea if I'm reading this right (probably not), but Marris Otter is actually one of the higher yields, surpassed only by a few wheat malts (assuming I didn't miss any when skimming through).

    Confusion about Yield

I've been wanting to brew a winter ale with Marris Otter. I've never actually brewed with this malt, so I don't know much about it. I typically would use a 2-row, but thought I'd change it up. I was reading the wiki page on Marris Otter and it states, "its yield has been surpassed hugely by more...

Why all the hate for leaf hops?

Oh, I thought we were tossing around debate topics, so I threw another one into the mix - extract, partial or all-grain. ;)

Why all the hate for leaf hops?

    And I prefer all-grain. ;) :mug:

Why all the hate for leaf hops?

Have you ever run into an issue with pellets still floating around at the end of your secondary? I probably should have given it another few days, but I needed to reuse the fermenter for another batch. Either way, I'll accept the minor flaw in the beer. It tasted delicious. Was tempted to...

Why all the hate for leaf hops?

I apologize if you thought I was attempting to troll for a debate because that certainly wasn't my intent. I was more curious if I was missing something wrong with leaf pellets, but after reading the responses to this thread, it doesn't sound like that's the case.

Why all the hate for leaf hops?

I guess "hate" is a strong word, but I've come across quite a few people saying they'd never go back to leaf hops and recommending pellets to the newbies. I guess I just don't understand what there is to like about pellets other than their size.

Why all the hate for leaf hops?

I've done two batches recently with leaf hops and I have to say, I never want to go back to the pellets ever again. Sure, they take up more room in the fridge, but they're significantly easier to work with and don't make as much of a mess. I don't have a hop basket (should probably get one), so...

    Another Rye IPA

Thank you very much! I've actually been a little concerned about the c-60, so that's a great idea. I hadn't considered victory, but that sounds like another good choice. Would you keep the same ratio or add a little more victory than I had Vienna? I really like the taste of Vienna, so I was...

    Rye IPA Attempt

I think it's interesting the parallels between our two recipes considering I didn't even read this thread until after I posted my recipe: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/another-rye-ipa-370996/#post4635613
