    Boil over on hop addition

Thanks for all the advice guys! Now that I think about it, I did add them pretty quickly. I will add them more slowly next time and that spray bottle idea will definitely be used. It was horrible! haha

    Boil over on hop addition

This is the first time I have had an issue with this but in my recent brew day I had about 6.5 gallons of wort in my 8 gallon kettle (I also added some FermCaps before it reached boil) and when I added my 60 minute hop addition (2oz Magnum pellets) the kettle immediately boiled over pretty...

    AG Mashing question

Thanks for the reply, I will definitely follow that rule. I tend to over think things. I have everything to brew next weekend. I will get my starter going probably on Wednesday or Thursday for brewing on saturday.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Yeah and because of that, my family found out I homebrew. I am afraid to give them anything I make now. I will never give them an imperial stout, ipa/dipa, strong ale, or barleywine. That's for sure. I think I learned that lesson a long time ago when I brought some bombers of three Floyd's...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

This past Easter, I was at a family gathering and someone's uncle was there and he found out that I homebrew also, and he had me try his stout. It was tasty, but my family, being the mexicans they (we) are only like bud light, bud light lime, corona, etc. One of my uncle tried that guys stout...

    sanke conversion

Nice conversion! Being that I had a kegerator system before I got into homebrewing, however, all my couplers are all D-type sankey couplers so I have been on the hunt for 1/6th barrel sankey kegs so I don't have to convert my whole system to the soda keg couplers. At first, taking the ring out...

    AG Mashing question

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Thanks a lot for this post. Everything is much more clear with it. Yeah, looking at beersmith, I was just using the default values for loss to boil, loss to trub, dead space, and loss to fermentation. I will definitely do this experiments and more to gain a...

    AG Mashing question

So I will be doing my first all grain batch this weekend and I've been reading and reading about the process and I had a quick question. I will be doing a batch sparge in a 10 gallon round cooler. Beersmith tells me for 16 lbs of grain, I should mash with 5.80 gallons of water (at 1.25 qts/lb...

    Kegerator faucet issue

Fixed. When I took it apart I realized immediately that I put the wrong, thicker washer in the connection for the faucet to the shank. So dumb, haha

    Kegerator faucet issue

I figure that's probably the issue. I've never had anything like that happen before though. Do you think the main culprit might be the compression bonnet or the handle jacket? Or probably a mixture of everything haha

    Kegerator faucet issue

I have a kegerator that was used solely for craft brews but now that I know how to disassemble a sanke keg to clean and use for homebrewing, I will be using that. Last time I switched out kegs and cleaned all the tap equipment and put everything back together, I have come across an issue with...

    Kegging commercial kegs

Here's a link to another way without having to remove the spear. I just wonder about oxygenation and cleaning. http://itswhatsontap.wordpress.com/2012/05/21/filling-a-sanke-keg-tutorial/

    Kegging commercial kegs

Here is a link to disassembly and reassembly of a sanke keg. Note: make sure to purge all CO2 from the keg first. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZPfZ_AL380

    Kegging commercial kegs

I believe that's sarcasm. I have a few sanke's that were basically given away from the New Belgium Brewery that I would love to use for dispensing. Getting the ring off seems a bit messy but I did see online someone basically augmented a snake coupler to use to fill the keg but it might be...

    Controlling fermentation temp

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will try it ASAP.

    Controlling fermentation temp

So it's getting warmer (my thermostat says the ambient temperature without the heater/cooler on is 67F) and I want to ferment in the low 60's. a temperature controller for a fermentation chamber is my next project but for now, is there anything I can do to keep the temperature down? I was...

    Mash Tun Question

Is channeling more of an issue with a large grain bag like this, or do you just mean in general?

    Yeast starter question

What I did my first time was to leave it for around 30 hours on the stir plate, leave it for at least 24 hours in the fridge and then I decanted and allowed the starter to come up to room temp over a few hours. Then swirl away and pitch it. I got great activity really fast (too bad I chose the...

    Halted fermentation with an IPA

Make sure to keep the temperature well below 70F. The ambient temperature will not be the same as the temperature in the carboy during heavy fermentation. The carboy will definitely be at a higher temperature than the ambient temperature.

    Mash Tun Question

I found a 2'x3' bag. That's more than enough I think. It wouldn't effect the fly sparge at all would it?
