    Herms temp monitoring location

Your hlt should only be 1-2 degrees above your mash temperatures. You can measure at either the return to the top of the mash or at the output of the mash. A measurement at the mash output will take longer to read within 1 degree of your hlt temperature because you need to heat the grain...

    Yakima Valley hops

I have probably ordered 10-15 #'s from them over the past couple years and have had 3 punctured packaging issues. Received some a pound of centennial that has lost its seal and seems squishy to the touch today going to package it tonight and see if there is a bigger problem in the pouch.

California WTB: 3.5gal SSBrewtech Brewbucket Mini

Both of these items will likely be few and far between for used. If you do buy some new items I would look at the morebeer slimline torpedo 2.5 gallon kegs. They are stackable, and you can catch them on sale occasionally. When you figure free shipping they are competitively priced. I really...

    What fermenter are you using?

I have used about everything. I own several ss brew buckets and a ss brewtech conical now. I would buy 2 brew buckets before I ever bought another conical. I can find little reason to justify the extra cleaning and cost a conical requires. I would not buy the brewmaster editions with the...

    NHC Results

https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/national-homebrew-competition/dates-deadlines/ April 27 at the latest looks like the deadline. But it looks like once the scoresheets are scanned and entered for each location the results may be posted. Scanning is a pretty time consuming job and may...

    Pre-Drilled Boil Kettle?

Spike will do whatever you want.

    Bit confused!

If you are using city water there is certainly a chance of a seasonal ph swing that could affect clarity. Did you grind finer than normal? Did you switch your sparging methods?

The proper use of raisins for beer

I brew a carrot cake dubbel that has won a bunch of medals. It’s one of my favorite brew days. I take a large box of brown raisins and rehydrate them in carrot juice for 30 minutes around 160 then I use an immersion blender to purée them. I bring to a boil for a few minutes and add my spices...

    Riptide vs. Chugger pump

They now make riptide replacement heads for march and chugger pumps. I run 1 pump with exclusively water and 1 with wort recirculation. I have considered swapping out the wort head and then selling my inline with a valve to recoup a bit of the cost. The easy cleaning feature would be nice.

    Test Mash

what about Brun or the mash ph are you trying to test exactly? Whether or not it's accurate? I can say from my experience using both ro and house water that it is rarely ever off. If it is off it is no more than .1 which is more likely .05 ish due to being on the edge of range. I test most...

Michigan Spiedel Fermentors & Accys, Glass Carboys, Flask

I have several brew buckets still use my 5g glass for secondary with mead, ciders and sours so you may want to consider that before letting them all go. Was something I didnt really think of when I made the switch.

    Raspberries in a Berliner Weisse

The only time I secondary is when adding fruit. If you have the vessel I would put the berries into the second fermenter then rack on top of them Rasperries are done when they turn white which is anywhere from 5-7 days in my experience. Im sure they would be fine sitting for 10 though. They...

    Adding orange tincture to keg

How i generally do zest is to fill the jar halfway with vodka the zest will eventually settle and you can use just the vodka. Measure out 3-4 cups of 4-6oz samples. Then dose each cup with 1ml 1.5ml 2ml pick the one you like best then scale up based upon your batch size.

Chilling wort ... advice no new purchase

I’m in Florida just swapped back to my immersion chiller from a morebeer counterflow. The counterflow worked well but not well enough that it made up for the ease of use with a immersion chiller

eHerms, temp differentials, and denaturing - oh my! Spike system

If you are running your mash recirculation through the HLT at 160° then you are effectively mashing at 160° The HLT should be set 0°-2° different from your desired mash temperature. The temperature of the wort coming out of the coil returning to the mash is your mash temp and given time that...

20g Spike Kettle for 6g batches

Another thing is my hydra immersion chiller was not fully immersed in the 20g if I did anything smaller than 6g. So if you use an immersion chiller that is something to consider too.

20g Spike Kettle for 6g batches

I use a 10g blichmann for 6g batches 8g preboil. I have a 20g spike I use for 12 gallon batches. I hated using the 20g for 6g batches because it was a pita to move about and clean. it was also a pain for group brews. I would get a 15g and just deal with watching the pot closely and use some...
