Need to reduce headspace in secondary?

I am guessing I could be a couple quarts low. This pic is a few days old, but I still have a lot of krausen. I saw somewhere that the 5 gal. mark on a 6 gal. Better Bottle is the mid point of the top ring. I am just under that. Good idea on the marbles. Maybe a bag of smooth aquarium rocks...

Need to reduce headspace in secondary?

I have a Strong Dark Belgian in primary. I will be doing secondary in a 5 gallon glass carboy. I lost a little volume through my blow-off tube, and was wondering if anyone had any tips on reducing the headspace in secondary? It is going to be there for a 4-5 weeks. I have heard of people...

    First time Brewing problem?

Just wondering, how big is your glass carboy? If it is only 5 gallons you probably ran out of headspace.

    first attempt. couple noob questions

My kit came with a 6 gallon primary fermenter, a 5 gallon glass carboy for secondary and a bottling bucket. I picked up 6 gallon better bottle to do my primary and I use the 6 gallon bucket for my sanitizing solution. I am glad I got the better bottle. It is nice to be able to see that is going...

Thanks guys. I am at about 80 hours in and the fermentation is slowing down a bit. Still getting a good burp every 15 seconds. Lots of activity going on in there still.

My 1st batch: OG and Candi Sugar question

I just did my first batch on the 22nd. I am attempting a Strong Dark Belgian (Rochefort 8 clone). Full boil with extracts and grains. WLP530 2000ml starter. I used a turkey fryer outside. I have two questions. 1.) My recipe called for 2 lbs. of Belgian Dark Candi Sugar and 1 lb. of corn sugar...

brewing my first batch this weekend. 2 quick questions:

I just did my 1st batch myself. I was suprised by how smoothly everything went. One thing I did that really helped me get organized: Post-it notes. I had my recipe handy, but I also had all of my ingredients laid out on a table in order, with post-it notes attached telling me at what point to...

    Noob brewer from Central IL

Hey kammee, that's what I was hoping to hear. I actually live closer to Galesburg, but I do get to Peoria quite often. If you didn't know already Galesburg has a pretty good home brew shop. It's called Something's Brewn. Check them out if you ever get up here. I also recommend Budde's Pizza and...

    Noob brewer from Central IL

I brewed by 1st batch today! I am attempting a Strong Dark Belgian (extract with grains, OG 1.09). So far so good. Brew day went extremely well. Narrowly averted a boil over when the UPS guys showed right after I added my LME. I made a big yeast starter and It is really taking off. I can hear...
