    Ontario Beer in Pop Tops

Yep, regular caps. I have never had a canadian twist off bottle break or fail to seal.

    Ontario Beer in Pop Tops

I think hoptical illusion is made by a brewery called Flying Monkeys. They also make a light ale and an amber ale. All of these beers are definitely worth trying, I have been pretty impressed with all of them. Their light ale is by far my favorite light beer out there, its so strange to have...

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

Huh, so the added 460 ppm sodium really came through eh? Considering seawater is a little over 10,000 ppm I would have hoped you'd have a little more wiggle room. Thanks for updating, its great when these thread come full circle!

    Recurring acetaldehyde problem

Good question, you might be interested in following this thread where someone is having similar problems. Might I ask if you are using a plastic primary? It sounds like this thread is leaning towards a possible infection or off flavour getting carried forward from the primary...

    S-04 and sourness?

That is really interesting. Every now and then I run an extract kit, and the most recent was a cooper's stout. Instead of the coopers yeast and dextrose, I added DME and used S-04. It finished suprisingly high (like around 1.020). Unfortunately I then overcarbed it a bit. It seems that...

    Bulk bottle caps

Seems a lot of overkill...but if you were to go in with a few other guys, its seems like a minimal investment and you wouldn't be buying caps again anytime soon!

Can I mix two Muntons beer kits to make one strong beer?

If those cans are 3.75 lbs like the coopers, then mixing two together with no additional sugar will leave you around 1.042 in a 6 gallon batch. You would have to add 5 pounds of sugar to get up to 1.080 (although I don't think that much sugar would be advisable). You could add a little sugar and...

1st and 2nd brews take like apples (sort of)

Have you thought about using a glass primary? Since you are replacing the plastic anyway, glass has the added benefit of being less insulating leaving the outside the same temperature as the inside. If the equipment you bought came with a glass carboy to use as secondary, just use that, that...

    Bottle Conditioning Barleywine

First I would like to apologize to the OP for the hijack, although I think his question did get answered, and this is all barleywine related right? :) I think great minds must think alike, as I recently purchased some wax to put over the crown caps on some bottles of barleywine I want to age...

    Bottle Conditioning Barleywine

Of that I have no doubt, although a secondary that short is barely worth doing IMHO, I would either go longer or not at all. It won't mess anything up though. You could probably also skip the extra yeast if you wanted to, but adding it won't hurt anything, also IMHO.

    Bottle Conditioning Barleywine

I wouldn't be worried about the flip tops blowing off, more that the rubber gaskets are exposed to the air on the outside. If you want to keep some bottles for a few years, I would be concerned that the rubber could crack, and that you could lose your seal. I personally love flip tops for...

    Bottle Conditioning Barleywine

The one thing that I might worry a little about is the seal on those flip tops when long term aging. If I was going long term I would definitely want crown caps, and it might be worth considering O2 absorbing caps.

    Bottle Conditioning Barleywine

I thought that I would throw in some personal experience. I brewed a barleywine last year, gave it a month in primary and a little over a month in secondary. I did not add yeast at bottling. After about a month in bottles, there was little or no carbonation. After a little over two months in...

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

But it isnt really 20% sanitizer is it? I mean lets say he added 20 grams of sanitizer (at recommended dosage though it was probably less), which is half sodium percarbonate and half sodium sulfate. The percarbonate breaks down into carbonate and peroxide, and the peroxide decomposes into O2...

    Starting an Ontario, Canada Brewpub...

I see that someone is starting one up in my neck of the woods too, I can't imagine the paperwork involved in getting something like this off the ground in Ontario. Its definitely good to see though. I'm just hoping that they will sell me some grain if I buy enough beer! :tank...

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

Of course when you came on, if you had told someone you just planned on leaving your beer on the primary yeast cake for 4 weeks or more, or not to fear the foam, people also would have laughed you out of these here interwebs. But people posted results and as a community we learned something...

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

Sodium sulphate is not really toxic strictly speaking, here is an excerpt from HERA 300 mg per kg is a little lower than the threshold for sodium carbonate, but still, if you used 1 tablespoon of that mixture, and half of that was sodium sulphate that was about 10 grams. If you weigh 70 kg...

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

There seems to be some concern about the safety of sodium percarbonate, I thought that perhaps a reference might help. This comes from http://www.heraproject.com/files/6-F-04-HERA%20percarbonate%20full%20web%20wd.pdf

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

I'm going to totally agree with that, I don't think anyones going to get hurt. Beer might taste bad, but I don't think its dangerous.

poured wort on sanitizer solution - HELP!

Actually, sodium percarbonate breaks down into hydrogen peroxide (which breaks down into water and oxygen), and sodium carbonate which is soda ash or washing soda (not bicarbonate which is baking soda). Soda ash is actually used as a food additive (E500), the following I pulled off of the...
