Food grade fermenter used for something else first?

Plastic will retain odors pretty well. I picked up a 5 gal bucket that had pickles in it, that was 3 years ago and it still smells like pickles.

    Another sanke fermenter

Excellent idea. How hard was the corny lid to cut and how well does it fit? Did you use a jigsaw it a Dremel or what?

    Another sanke fermenter

Hi all, Recently acquired an sanke keg (not stolen), and want to create a fermenter out of it. I currently use 5 gal carboys and dislike them for several reasons - 1) small opening - hard to clean -hard to shove dry hops in/out (and I like me some dry hop) 2) glass - safety - safety -...

Nebraska hops made me do it!

Tim, just saw this post. I'm actually in oneill as well. If you ever need hops , I've got more growing in my backyard than I can use, so you're more than welcome to have some. Plus, it's nice to see other homebrewers in oneill!

    DIY controller vs Prebuilt costs?

DIY is more fulfilling, more time consuming but more fulfilling. I guess that's just part of this being a hobby. I enjoyed building my simple controller, and it gave me something to think about, design, and parts to source. If you aren't in the market for spending the time to design and learn...

Is it too late for my Chimay Clone

Uh oh, wrong water profile but everything else checks out? Probably ruined. I'd dump it, but it should be inspected by a seasoned beer drinker. Better send it to me to be sure ;)

    Pot Diameter for Induction Burner

I've got the avantco 3500w with a bayou 1064. Quite a but hangs over. The only portion that gets hot is the area within the circle on the unit itself (and the pot portion over it). Doesn't matter how much hangs over.

    eHerms question

You will be fine. Where is your thermometer, on the coil return side? That will give you the exit temp of the wort from the hlt, regardless of if there is a hot spot or cool spot. Heck, my coil is too large for my hlt and sometimes half of it sticks above the water in my hlt, that just means the...

    Antibiotic added to wort?

*takes deep breath* Aaaaand, when researchers study antibiotic resistance by exposing them to resistance selections, the resulting bacteria are destroyed by aterilization or non-antibiotic disinfectants that eradicate the resulting bacterial populations. There is no way for those resistant...

    Antibiotic added to wort?

The only anitbiotics that can be fed to animals are now heavily regulated by the FDA, and require a written directive from a licensed veterinarian. Futhermore, only certain antibiotics can be used in animal feed because they were deemed the have a level of resistance the government doesn't want...

    Antibiotic added to wort?

@Dland hit it on the head. Antibiotics used in production animal medicine must be fully metabolized such that they are below acceptable levels in tissues or edible products (milk). These acceptable levels are determined by dosage the animal receives (my of drug per kg of animal) and route of...

    Wort Chiller

I used a copper immersion chiller for a year or so. Then I took that, unrolled it, slid a garden hose over the outside a rigged up fittings to make a counterflow chiller. It works best with a pump, but you can rig it such that it would work without a pump. It works much more effectively than the...

    Cold Crashed IPA Too Early

Bottle her up. If you've already put in your dry hops, you don't want to let them sit in there for more than a week really. If the beer is down as far as the yeast will take it, there is no point in letting it bulk condition any longer. IPAs are best fresh (albeit with some condition), but if...

    Anybody harvesting hops yet?

been harvesting as much as fits in my dehydrator each evening (about 4 oz dried). Going to harvest a bunch tomorrow, about 4 oz every 2 hours. I like to pick them fresh then dehydrate immediately. Package in 1 and 2 oz increments in vacuum sealed bags then into the freezer.
