    Free Online Beer Chemistry Course

I am truly impressed with how much effort Dr. Morvant has put into a 1 credit course that is being offered for free to the online community. This is pioneering. Thank you.

    Oregon Rum Barrels

What is the condition of the barrels? I'm interested but got a little concerned when reading the following about using rum barrels. “Rum distillers generally store barrels on their ends when filled rather than their sides, and many are stored outdoors, exposed to the elements. As a result...

Growler Savers @Nikobrew - Keep Beer Fresh!

any reviews from users on HBT? I searched the threads and could only find threads from when it was being funded on kickstarter, no followup on if happy customers. Think it would work with my bike CO2 inflator? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003M2PNGY/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

    Free Online Beer Chemistry Course

Just discovered and signed up for the course this evening. What happens if I don't take the first quiz by the deadline? Not an OU student so not concerned about the grade. Just want to learn about chemistry of beer. Thanks for the open course.

Bottling in Base Camp In-tents India Pale Lager Bottles

Tried putting a cap on it with my wing capper with no luck. Seems like it couldn't grip the neck. Should I try a bench capper?

Bottling in Base Camp In-tents India Pale Lager Bottles

Has anyone tried bottling in Base Camp In-tents India Pale Lager bottles? If you haven't seen these bottles, they are 22 oz aluminum pry-top and look like the picture below. I don't see any reason why you couldn't and like the portability of non breakable bottles for camping, fishing...

How did you get free shipping on those?

    Pasteurizing a whole corny keg?

I was under the impression it's not necessary to pasteurize if you keg your cider.

    Adding fresh fruits/ingredients

I've seen recipes say to soak in vodka. That is what I did for my blackberry cider that's fermenting. Sampled today and no infection.

Why not let wort cool overnight in brew kettle?

Can you guide me to info on how to alter the hop additions to account for the no chill method?

Why not let wort cool overnight in brew kettle?

Thanks for chiming in everyone. It seems like there are 2 camps on this, those willing to take the chance and those unwilling to risk infection. I respect the thoughts and opinions on both sides. I'm obviously still torn, but I lean toward the simplicity and laziness of the overnight chill...

Why not let wort cool overnight in brew kettle?

Yes, I agree. I've yet to have an infected batch and when you put it like that, it's probably not worth taking the chance.

Why not let wort cool overnight in brew kettle?

Ok. This makes sense. I still think it's unlikely to get bacteria in there after boiling and closing off the kettle with a lid. I would regret getting an infected batch.

Why not let wort cool overnight in brew kettle?

Thanks. I had not seen anything saying this was ok previously. It's nice to see that others have tried and had success with this method.

Why not let wort cool overnight in brew kettle?

One of the things I dislike most about brewing is waiting for my wort to cool in an ice bath before pitching yeast. I know an immersion chiller would be a good investment and would minimize the time it takes to cool the wort. I recently came across the recommendation of racking your wort to a...

5000 ml erlenmyer flast and stir plate setup

Thanks. So something like this? http://morebeer.com/products/glass-jar-1-gallon-clear.html Do you just boil your water/DME in a saucepan then add the wort and yeast to the 1 gal jug when cooled and put on the stir plate?

5000 ml erlenmyer flast and stir plate setup

I've been doing yeast starters with the 1000 ml yeast starter kit from NB and using the intermittent shake/swirl method rather than a stir plate. I was listening the the BN podcast on yeast and John and Jamil recommend getting a 5000 ml erlenmeyer flask because that's as big as you'll ever need...

    Yeast shipping HOT

I put in a recent order with one of the big online homebrew shops. My order left the shop 7/30 and arrived 8/5. It's been in the 90s where I live and likely across much of the area the order was shipped through. Needless to say the ice pack it shipped with was melted and the yeast was warm when...
