    Forgot to rinse PBW.....

Update for anyone interested. Here's the finished product after 10 days in the keg. An IPA inspired by Sierra Nevada Celebration ale. No off flavors at all...man is it good! I won't be bottling the old way anytime soon!

    Forgot to rinse PBW.....

Thanks for the replies guys.....To clarify, yes I did dump the PBW out of the keg after shaking it for 5 minutes....just didn't rinse it with water. I did sanitize the keg with Star San but not the serving line. What a time saver kegging is though, just hope it doesn't kill me!! ;)

    Forgot to rinse PBW.....

Posted this in the bottling/kegging subforum but it's probably best suited here.... So after 2 years of bottling batches, I kegged my first batch last night. About 20 minutes after I kegged and pressurized the keg, I realized that I forgot to rinse the PBW from the keg and serving line…UGH...

    Forgot to rinse PBW.....

So after 2 years of bottling batches, I kegged my first batch last night. About 20 minutes after I kegged and pressurized the keg, I realized that I forgot to rinse the PBW from the keg and serving line…UGH! Before filling with beer, I put 2 gallons of hot water and a little PBW in the keg...

What craft beer do you secretly despise?

I had an Anchor Steam beer over the weekend and it was lousy....tasted like an old gym sock stuffed inside a smelly sneaker and it got worse as it sat in the glass. Don't tell anyone though as it's a secret!

How cold is too cold to brew outside?

I've got one planned for tomorrow night which in Mass. is looking like like low 20's with a little wind. Only time I'm required to be outside is during the boil as the mash and chill is done in my basement. Being the first real cold night of the year, It'll fell like single digits....cant wait!

AG brewers..whats the fasted you completed a brewday?

Average of last 3 brew days was about 3.5 hours....using BIAB in a 9 gallon pot on an outdoor burner. I usually start around 7-8 PM and finish around 10:30-11:30ish 15 minutes to heat up 6.5 gallons of strike water 10 minutes to add grains, stir and get to mash temp 60 minute mash 15...

    Grain Prices going up?

I saw the same thing today. Looks like they've raised all of their kit prices as well as some of the grain prices. Some all grain kits I bought over the last few months are now $2-3 higher. A pound of Rahr 2 row is now $1.49 vs 1.29. Sounds like an overall price hike.

    No $ for Vinator

IMO, a spray bottle is just as (if not more effective) than a vinator. A lot cheaper too. Couple sprays in a bottle, swish around, dump and you're good to go.

    Off flavor question

Thanks... good to know that it's likely not from the chiller. I cooled wort down to 63 and then pitched the yeast and fermentation was held at 65-66 for 3 weeks. I did everything the same as normal regarding sanitation etc. All of the ingredients were fresh. Is this the type of flavor that...

    Off flavor question

Made an all grain English pale ale beginning of August. Recipe consisted of 9 lbs of Maris otter, .5 lb of English crystal medium and 3 oz of kent goldings. Sprinkled Nottingham yeast and held fermentation at 64-65. One issue I had during the process was the hose clamp on my chiller broke so...

What do you use to hold your mash temp?

I brew in my basement in the vicinity of a clothes dryer. Last time I brewed, i tossed a few towels in the dryer for a few minutes, they came out hot and I wrapped them around my 9 gallon pot for an hour. Only lost about 1-2 degrees. I'd call it ghetto but not sure they have dryers in the...

FG of 1.002 on Wheat Beer?

well, the water was in the low sixties as it was in my basement overnight (should have clarified) and does it make much of a notable difference in water...spring vs distilled? Can't imagine it would...

FG of 1.002 on Wheat Beer?

Thanks for all the tips guys.:mug: So I calibrated my hydrometer last night. Added some room temperature spring water and let is sit for a while and the reading was around .997-.998. Definitely was a little below 1.00. I let is sit overnight and the reading didnt change....so it would...

FG of 1.002 on Wheat Beer?

@eluterio - thanks! I pitched 1 pack of US-05. Did not rehydrate. When chilling, I stirred the chiller in the hot wort...not sure I could fit the lid on my 9 gallon pot with the chiller in it. I've read it cools faster by stirring/dunking the chiller as opposed to letting it sit in the wort. I...

FG of 1.002 on Wheat Beer?

Brewed up my first all grain batch of American Wheat 2 weeks ago and got 1.050 as my starting gravity, took a sample last night and got 1.002….ended up bottling. I tasted the sample, it tasted a bit boozy and thin but not bad. I totally butchered my mash temps and ended in the 144-148...

    Thoughts on this water report

Hi, I'll be moving into a new house in the next couple of months that has a private well. As part of the inspection we had a water test done. For past brews, ive used bottled spring water and do partial mash brews and have been happy with the resutls. For ease of use, Id love to just use...

    Maillard Malts, who's used em'

I just received a shipment from NB yesterday that included 6 lbs of crushed grain each in their own 1 LB Maillard Malt bag. Each package contains the packaging date. Crystal 10 was packed on 2/19, Vienna on 2/12, 2Row on 2/19. Is it common for grains to be crushed well in advance of shipment?
