    Kegging

Being a porter it will fare better with oxidation. Than a pale ale. So don't dump it. I'd say pressurize the keg to 12psi or so and then disconnect the gas and liquid lines. Spray starsan on top and look for leaks. If you don't see anything, could be leaking from the gas post o-ring. Slap...

On my third brew, wondering how important fermentation temperature is

Most 1 gallon carboys don't have much headspace, so just keep that in mind. A blowoff tube is usually a must, depending on the OG, etc.

On my third brew, wondering how important fermentation temperature is

Lots of people are saying to go for a chest freezer for a ferm chamber. I'm sure that would work. Though, I ended up getting a mini fridge that didn't have a freezer section. I'm sure if you got one with a freezer, you could just bend it downward (depending on how it's made, did this with my...

    Kegging

Yeah, I would agree. My only observation was increasing my batch size. Though, after one brew bottling 5 gallons, I immediately gave up to kegging. I'm by no means a seasoned brewer, but they are definitely a lot better after those switches

    Add collar to kegerator

Laziness at its finest on display from me right here. Turns out the fridge has a reversible door, so there are already somewhere to screw into the fridge safely (assuming that will work). Will probably end up just using that with a bracket of some sort to 2-by or plywood!

how to tell when your co2 tank is empty?

Looks like you still have a few hundred psi in your tank. Don't think you'd need to even think about that until your needle is pretty much at the bottom.

    Kegging

For what it's worth, I used to make only 1 gallon batches, which were quite mediocre, at best. I chanced it to get a 5 gallon BIAB system going, with a mini fridge fermentation chamber and one for a kegerator (very tightly holds two kegs). Really, just going up in volume made my beers taste so...

    Add collar to kegerator

'ello all. I want to add a collar to my fermentation, which is a mini fridge (currently taping the door so my fermonster doesn't pop it open). So, just like a collar to a keezer, but in the other direction. I'm planning on getting a 2x6, or whatever 2-by that will work for me (haven't...

Last few pints in keg taste much different

I appreciate everyone's input. All makes sense. After consulting with the keg, it turns out there was a good amount of gunk that settled out and must have gotten picked up as the volume dwindled down to a few pints (@McKnuckle, ya might be on to something with your theory in this case). I'm...

Last few pints in keg taste much different

I believe I kegged this batch at the end of October, so it's been a little over a month in there. This was an open transfer from fermenter to keg (working on getting closed transfer going soon). Like I said, this was 3 gallons. I purged the keg 2-3 times but given the large headspace, I...

Last few pints in keg taste much different

Ahh, that makes a lot more sense. I was thinking a plastic fermenter with the spigot near the bottom, and then a dip tube just immersed in the gunk at the bottom. Your advice makes much more sense now haha Given there's maybe only a few pints left (from what I can tell that sloshes around)...

Last few pints in keg taste much different

Yes, that makes sense. What doesn't entirely make sense to me is that I've pulled small glasses previously, after at least having the keg sitting overnight (if not longer) and it tasted fine. After the bad tasting taster glass, I pulled a full pint as well with the same flavor. Maybe it still...

Last few pints in keg taste much different

That's interesting. No special tubing, and I haven't been discarding the first few ounces since it tasted fine up until now. Wonder if that has always been oxidized but was covered up with 90% of the pint coming from the bulk of the keg covering up the flavor. But with a few pints left, the...

Last few pints in keg taste much different

I'm about to kick my first keg. I've got maybe 2 or 3 more pints left in it (was 3 gallons of an APA). The beer tasted fine throughout the month or so I had it. On Friday I had a pint or two and it tasted fine. The next day, I pulled a small sample just because I wanted a little beer, and it...

Different efficiencies between batches of low alcohol and high alcohol ... Why?

If these were put on by the manufacturer, double check the accuracy of them. The gallon markers on my kettle are spaced slightly farther apart than one gallon, compounding the error my over a half gallon when the kettle is mostly full. But as you said, it would be a consistent error (if it is...

    Keg dip tube off center.

Yeah, I thought maybe I swapped them between the 2 I got this time but I think it's just the threaded post that's part of the top of the keg. It's just misaligned. I'm probably going to set this one aside and bend the tube on place or just swap the sides of I need to use it. Good thought though

    Keg dip tube off center.

I'd say you definitely speak from experience then! I'm thinking that since the posts have the same threads, I'm just going to swap the (gas tube in liquid posts, vice versa), scrape off the "in" and "out" markings on the rubber, and mark them a different way. The liquid tube lines up fine if...

    Keg dip tube off center.

The problem isn't the bend in the tube, but how the tube aligns in the post. There are channels on the post that align with the corresponding on the tube, which locks it in place and prevents the tube from spinning. Why do you say it can't properly be purged? It would leave too much sanitizer...

    Keg dip tube off center.

I pulled the dip tube up a bit just to take a picture off those centering notches. Though it does take a little finagling to get it so it sits properly on the post

    Keg dip tube off center.

I figured it is a pretty common occurrence. I'm more worried about not getting a good seal. But probably just over thinking it. Maybe I'll just lop off the last quarter inch or so and call it a day.
