90min vs 60 min boil - from a practicality standpoint

I understand the whole thing with 90 min boils: DMS for pilsner, greater hop utilization, concentrate wort for higher OG, yadda yadda... I do BIAB and boil on propane, focus mostly on APA/IPAs. To me, I can just add some more grains to the mash to get my OG. Use higher AA hops at 60 mins to...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Making a hoppy American pale ale, all cascade (couldn't pass up $5 for a pound). Mashed in not too long ago!

    More to balance than BU:GU?

A lot of posts since I last looked.. But here is the recipe I used. 5.5 gal into the fermenter 9.5# Vienna (90%) 0.56# Munich (5.4%) 0.25# C40 (2.4%) 0.125# Carapils (1.2%) 0.125# Black Malt (1.2%) Water Chemistry (from distilled, set to Amber Dry in BrunWater) 53ppm Calcium 13ppm Magnesium...

    (Mostly) Finished Keezer

Thanks! Yeah, maple and cherry always looks nice. I don't have any type of shutoff valves other than what's on the regulator. Figured as long as a disconnect is attached, then it's a closed system. And 4 inch shanks. Bought 3 inch and they were a bit too short. Could have made them work...

    (Mostly) Finished Keezer

I liked the look of them on the left and just rolled with it. But, I plan on doing some tube management and run it along the wood. But also, taps on the right would get in the way when a keg is on the hump. Just no winning sometimes

    (Mostly) Finished Keezer

Keezer I'm slapping together is mostly done, and I'm pretty happy about it and excited to be using it so I figured I'd show it off a bit! 7cf chest freezer. Built a 2x8 collar around with, finished with maple ply and cherry trim. 3 faucets for now, but I can finegal 5 kegs in there with...

    More to balance than BU:GU?

Thanks for the input all. I guess it just boils down (heh) to not just the residual sugars based on the FG, but how those sugars/flavors are perceived. Makes sense, and kinda what I was thinking after a while. Also, I was hoping to just use vienna, caramunich, and a little black malt as the...

    More to balance than BU:GU?

I had a vienna lager a little while back that I really liked so figured I'd give it a go trying to make one. Brewed one up about 2 months ago and finally took a sample of it from the keg. Sad day, because it didn't really taste how I was hoping. It has a subtle bready/toasty flavor from the...

    Brewcipher and Sucrose

Ya know yer program, and that's what I appreciates about ya. Correct, it was with BIAB settings.

    Brewcipher and Sucrose

I'm playing around with Brewcipher while making a recipe. I put in 9lb of pilsner malt and the strike volume is 7.92 gal. If I then add 0.5 lb of sucrose to the grain/fermentable list, the strike water goes down to 7.88 gal. Why would adding sucrose cause the strike volume to decrease? Does...

    EVA Barrier on 1/4" Barb

Yes, that is what I meant. Though I'm thinking it's not worth it and just stretch the tubing over the barb. Also, I know I've heard it's an integral part of the valve, but why is that? Is there something inside the barb that does something with the valve?

    What are you drinking now?

Homebrew Chinook ipa. Cleared up quite nicely and is still tasting great after a month in the keg

    EVA Barrier on 1/4" Barb

I may have just came across a groundbreaking epiphany. I have to swap out the 5/16" barb on the regulator out-line to a 1/4" flare fitting, then the corresponding Duotight flare fitting can just get unscrewed. So, unnecessary for the disconnects in the first place...

    EVA Barrier on 1/4" Barb

I'm building myself a kegerator and am looking to upgrade the gas lines to EVA Barrier. I bought a few 1/4" gas line disconnects and wanted to put it on the gas main line outside of the freezer to easily disconnect the tank from. Does anyone have any experience with getting the EVA Barrier...

Beer left in faucet after a pour

Haha, I drink enough regularly. My concern is more that it just 'releases' (?) itself in-between pours. I got perlick faucets, forward sealing and what have you. But I imagine it would/should happen with any kind. Like, if you stop a siphon, the wort doesn't rush out the end of the tube, it...

Beer left in faucet after a pour

So, I just bought some new faucets for the keezer I'm going to make. Decided to see how the new faucets work so I hooked up some tubing, put some water in a keg, and let 'er rip. Now, I'm just holding the faucet/shank in my hand, it's not mounted on the keezer or anything. From my playing...

To Get a Hop Spider or Not?

I will second (or third, or fourth) a lot of what was mentioned above. I bought one a while ago and used it a few times. Even with a low hopped beer it was a pain to deal with. More hops, more problems. I think I have a 400 micron size and it just never drained except with some...

lost aroma and flavor after a week in keg

I've purged kegs using StarSan but pushed it out with my CO2 tank. Are you suggesting that the pressure from fermentation CO2 creation is enough to push the StarSan out of the keg? If not, does anyone know if that would work?

Good dry hop for Idaho7 IPA

When you say a hop "doesn't survive fermentation", do you mean the aroma of it? I can't imagine you'd be losing flavor since that would (way out of my wheel house here) chemically bonded to the wort? Yeah, I'm wishing I had more Idaho 7 for the dry hops but unfortunately do not. I'm...

Good dry hop for Idaho7 IPA

Thanks for the inputs. I might just roll with a combo of those two. My initial concern was making sure the dry hopped hops play nicely with the Idaho 7, but my guess is that most aroma hops can go with pretty much everything. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, anyway. I definitely have...
