How much dry yeast for 10 gallon batch

Thanks for the info. Once my ferentation chamber is built and I move to liquid yeast will one package of lets say wyeast 1056 be sufficient for this beer if I use a starter?

How much dry yeast for 10 gallon batch

Hey guys, I'm brewing my first 10 gallon batch tonight and was wondering if I need more than 1 pack of dry yeast. I use Danstar Nottingham ale yeast for my 5 gallon pale ales and they turn out great. I always rehydrate the yeast and was wondering if 1 pack is enough for a 10gallon batch. OG...

Efficiency woes, fooled me twice shame on me.

I meant stirring during the mash rest. For instance I usually mash for 60min and will stir at 45min, 30min and 15min. I didn't used to stir after dough in and this increased my efficiency quite a bit. For me switching from from fly sparging to batch sparging also increased my efficiency. I...

Efficiency woes, fooled me twice shame on me.

Yup, I just purchased a cheap corona mill that I attached a drill to and get way better efficiency then when I would get it crushed at my LHBS. Do you stir your mash at all? Have you tried batch sparging instead of fly sparging?

    Winter Brewing - Heat Source

It gets up to -40C in the winter where I live so outside brewing isn't an option. I ended up going with a 4500Watt blichmann boil coil and brewing indoors.

    Oxidation??

That shouldn't be an issue as the CO2 created during fermentation would push out the oxygen.

    Silly question - Turkey baster

    It will be fine.

    Mashing and collecting wort questions

This may not work for everyone but I found that stirring my mash 2-3 times during the 60min rest increased my efficiency.

Does your LHBS acknowledge your custom?

I have 2 LHBS in my city. One has super friendly staff who recognize me and we'll chat a bit when I drop in but their prices aren't good. They don't sell grains or hops in bulk so unfortunately I only go their for equipment and yeast and anything else where the price is only slightly higher...

Just so other people know the OP is talking about the new 4th edition that came out this month. Lots of info has been updated since the first edition.

    Bulk orders for cheap

I can't comment on grain in the USA but I searched everywhere and the cheapest hops I could find hopsdirect.com I didn't order from them as they wanted $55USD to ship my 7lb of hops but their price per lb was better than yakimavalley and a bunch of other places I checked.

What is your go to pale ale yeast?

Never said I couldn't do a yeast starter. My issue was all my LHBS were out of stock on the Wyeast 1056 I wanted to try.

    New joy of homebrewing book

It is a fantastic book. I just finished the 4th edition as well as the Homebrewers Companion he wrote. I got both off Amazon for about $30 and they are worth every penny.

How do you break down the cost of your brewing?

I used to until I realized how much I could save ordering in bulk. Hops are down to $1-2 an ounce, grain is $0.8 - 1.2 per lb so even if I use 4-5oz of hops and buy new yeast it costs me $20ish per 5Gal batch. Electricity is dirt cheap in Canada and I use a blichmann 4500watt boild coil so...

Cooling wort with frozen plastic bottles

I ended up using 4 X 500ml bottles and it worked fairly well. I used starsan to clean a part of my freezer, filled the bottles with water and dipped them in starsan. When I took them out of the freezer I dipped them in starsan again.

Cooling wort with frozen plastic bottles

Thanks for the input. The bottles are new and in really good condition so I'm not to worried about scratches and bacteria. A friend of mine and I invested in a fair amount of money in decent equipment and we brew at his place since my electric panel could not accommodate another 240v needed...

Cooling wort with frozen plastic bottles

I was just wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't try cooling wort with plastic PET bottles that are %70 filled with water and then frozen. I'm doing BIAB brews at home and have been chilling with ice baths but it takes a while to chill to fermentation temps. My idea is to take clean PET...
