    brewers best october feast

Just follow the directions and give it a shot. You'll learn something and can determine your own likes or dislikes. Don't worry about what others think about a particular style at this stage, it's more about learning the steps and brewing something you think you will like....so go for it!

    Forced Carbonation problems

so are you kegging or bottling? unless you've got a counter pressure filler like this http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/brewing/kegging/draft-bottling/counter-pressure-filler.html you will likely have poor results in filling your bottles from an already carbonated keg. now if you are...

    Vintage cabinet kegerator build

Ahh, just clicked the link. Very cool. Yes, my thought is if you did the U, it would be easier/possible to do air with a couple of small fans, unless you are going glycol. By the way, impressive welding skills!

    Vintage cabinet kegerator build

I like the design, but cooling the tower takes a little more thought. Were you thinking forced air? What about taking the L all the way across for a U? Either way, it's definitely a beer bar!

Progress on Brown Ale (Newcastle Clone)

Looking to keg it on Monday, three weeks total. So far so good, last tasting was good, sitting at what I'm sure is FG of 1.015. A little estery, so I'm hoping 3 weeks in the keg will round it out!

Any quick fix to raise fermentation chest temp

Pretty much, but you need a light fixture base, a cord (I cut off an old computer power cord) and a bulb. Most people either use a ceramic bulb or put a regular bulb in a paint can to shield from the light. I think the paint can also helps spread the heat and protects the bulb. lots of...

    Best Burner?

while I was getting by with my turkey fryer burner (nothing special), I did just get a Blichmann burner for Christmas.....all I can tell you is that this thing is a tank, super heavy and slightly sinister, and pretty deluxe for my purposes. The guys at the LHBS sure like these things, for what...

Any quick fix to raise fermentation chest temp

http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Reptile-Cable-14-75-Feet/dp/B001OVBEEK/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1419691604&sr=1-1&keywords=zoo+med+reptile+heat+cable I used the 25 watt reptile cable from Amazon. At 11 bucks, it does the job in my 7cuft fermentation chamber during cold snaps here...

First try oatmeal stout, bottle or keg for best flavor?

just opened a keg of Holiday Milk Chocolate Stout. 2 weeks in the fermenter and 3.5 weeks in the keg to both age and carbonate with priming sugar (using the proper amount for kegging vs bottling). For this batch anyway, it seems like the carbonation is very "nitrogen like" in that the...

    Vintage cabinet kegerator build

if you divided the compartment, you could have ultimate flexibility to ferm on one side and serve on the other, or do either (full on kegerator, or full on fermentor) on both sides as long as you have individual temp controls for those compressors.

Progress on Brown Ale (Newcastle Clone)

So should I lower it a few degrees? Perhaps to 67?

Progress on Brown Ale (Newcastle Clone)

Last week, I brewed a Newcastle clone from AHS. I brewed it last year (extract kit with specialty grains) and it was a disaster: it turned out estery, it wasn't really drinkable, tasted like "juicy fruit." Went mini-mash this year and today, after 6 days, I took my first reading. OG was...

New To Home Brewing - Thoughts before I buy

I started in a similar fashion, with kegging as my target. Of all the suggestions, if I could go back in time I would have started with 8 gal turkey fryer I have now. It was 40 or 50 bucks, got me out of the kitchen and easily saved me a hour per day and aggravation of the wife. I am now...

Converting the Frigidaire 7.2 cu ft Chest Freezer

This just goes to show you how a post can keep on giving after what, four years? I looked at the beginning of the post and thought, man, how would my white Costco freezer look, then skipped to the back and there was a great example! Mine will be more outdoor party friendly, i.e. not quite as...

Let starter sit for 3 days...do I need to restart it?

I made my first starter (Wyeast 1099 Whitbread) on Thursday afternoon and it was bubbling by Friday morning. I had hoped to brew my Newcastle-ish clone on late Friday or Saturday, but wasn't able to get started. I'd like to brew this afternoon, but have I let the starter sit too long at 3...

    holiday stout question

yes, it's sweet for sure. It's a milk stout, so a pound of lactose is in there as well. Andy...you are spot on, the LHBS guys thought that "long chain sugars" were created when I boiled the grain. that said, and as metanoia suggested, I'm still suspicious of my pitching temps. I'll do...
