A few questions about my process

The LHBS wouldn't let me set their mill to lower than .040" saying that it will not crush lower or take too long to do (in their defense it was closing time). I'm going to either run it though twice or try and set it to that next time. I've checked my dial thermometer against the digital and...

A few questions about my process

First let me start out by saying that I've been having an issue with efficiency so I've been trying to troubleshoot my process. Everything from crush to pH to thermometer and hydrometer corrections and calibreations. That being said I'm still running into issues but getting better since I've...

    Help a Brewer Out

A huge thanks goes out to the people that have voted. I forgot to let everyone know that this is a 5 day contest and you can only vote once. Voting ends on Friday @ 5pm CST. Related to our brewing efforts. We just brewed 25 gallons of Pale Ale that this community played a huge roll in...

    Help a Brewer Out

So my brewing buddy is in a contest to get an internship. The way he wins the job is oddly enough through Facebook "likes". He mentions his support of local (Minneapolis MN) craft beer and how he brews. He's a member of our community and I know we are a loyal bunch. Besides him being a brewer...

    Tasting help

I talked with some other brewers and they helped me out with understanding what affect mash temp, water profiles and yeast attenuation has on perceived bitterness. I think I'm all set now. Thanks.

    Tasting help

So will sweet malts like crystal/caramel tend to mask bitterness or bring it though more? What about the specialty and color malts like victory or vienna? Does anyone have good resources that I could go to for this type of information. I've been researching malts all morning and I'm not finding...

    Tasting help

Right. So for these 2 beers Brooklyn's is 47 IBUs and Odell's is 60 IBUs both being IPA's with 7% ABV. Is it really going to be the grain bill that is going to be the difference? The amount of grain used is probably close to being the same. Am I right in thinking it is just the different types...

    Tasting help

Right. I know that using different hops with different AA%'s early in the boil will give you more or less bitterness and later additions with determine the aroma. I guess my question is weather or not higher IBU's ALWAYS = a more bitter taste.

    Tasting help

I have been tasting IPA's and trying to create a recipe that I like. In our last blind tasting we we had Brooklyn Brewery's IPA and Odell's IPA. Comparing and contrasting the 2 I have some questions about IBU's that I can't seem to answer. Odell's IPA clocks in around 60 IBUS and BB's around...

    SG and other questions.

I totally hear you. We are trying to get beers that we CAN send into competitions. I usually don't worry about these things. I've done lots of AG batches and never even took a gravity reading. Bubbles in the airlock were good enough for me. Now I'm trying to dial in my process and hit my stuff...

    SG and other questions.

anyone have any suggestions? Do you need more info? I'm going to do more batches soon and want to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

    SG and other questions.

ok so here's more stats: the first batch I used 10 lbs of grain and used a 1.25 qt/grain ratio. I mashed and then collected 2 gallons of wort I added sparge water and collected twice to get my desired pre boil volume. This time I used 2 gallons each time to get 6 gallons for pre boil. I knew...

    SG and other questions.

So I brewed 6 batches of APA's this week and have some questions. My SG is really low on some of them. They all used mostly the same amount of base and the same type and brands of malt. The first one I brewed I came up short on vol going into fermenter. Maybe like 4.25 total. That SG read...

    APA recipe help

Thank you for responding! The IBU's will all fit the BJCP guidelines. I think all are somewhere in the 35-40 range. Kind of on the higher end of the style's spectrum. I think I am going to make them all. I've come across what I'm sure most people are finding - HOP SHORTAGE - on Amarillo...

    APA recipe help

I'm looking for feedback on these recipes. My goal is to create a classic APA that will appeal to a wide variety of people. I want a hop forward, balanced bitter, and a nose of citrus beer. Here are my recipe ideas. I tried to create a variety of grain bills to see what the color and taste...
