What I did for beer today

Checked in on my belgian tripel still sitting in the fermentation chamber. The gravity is stable so decided to begin the cold crash so set the stc1000 to 3C so should be good to bottle Saturday. My bad knee has settled compared to last week so hopefully I will not upset it too much carring...

    Considering doing my first starter

I probably shouldn't have drunk the sample after a three other 5.5% beers... I had a couple of glasses of my motueka toffee pale ale with my evening meal and then decidrd to check on my nelson sauvin smash with a glass of that. The difference between those two beers is huge and caused by the...

    Considering doing my first starter

I just took another sample. The gravity hasn't moved so its set to cold crash down to 3C for the weekend. Its resulted in a bananaey slightly spicey easy drinkable beer... It could be a little dangerous as I could drink it as fast as coke LOL. It will be interesting to see what the...

    REFRACTOMETER???

I'm in the both camp. Refractometer for everything but FG. Initially I had some inconsistent readings with the refractometer but sorted out the user error and its pretty consistant now. I often take 3 readings to be sure. Big thing is wort must be well mixed as you only have a tiny sample...

    Considering doing my first starter

I decided to create a label for this beer since its being bottled. Apart from changing you to your in the bottom part this should do when printed at a suitable size for 330ml bottles. I do do 2.5g batches sometimes and yep easier to carry. Even the 19L 5g ones arn't too bad but the 23L 6g...

    SSR running hot

Yep screws not tightened enough or bad crimp can be a problem. I've seen a bolt and lug in a switchboard at a place I worked glowing red hot. If you tightened the terminal bolts of the SSR while holding it you might not have got sufficient torque. Much easier to tighten when they are bolted down.

    Supplying Power for e-brewery

Thats an important one. Down here in NZ the typical house is fed with 230V single phase fused at 63A. With my 32A homebrew feed and the induction cooktop I do have to be careful (2 x 32A breakers in my panel plus everything else) LOL. I definitely have to manage my loading. I have run two...

My Budget was $200... That was a fail

I considered homebrew a hobby when i started. Started with a basic kit then soon ended up buying stuff... sort of expected that like all hobbies. At a certain point i decided to go all grain and to do that I built an eHERMS system. I considered that a hobby project too. Satisified my other...

    Considering doing my first starter

Yep, its getting another week. A wet weekend forcast combined with and my trashed knee being quite achey over the last few days I didn't bother checking on it. The knee needs a rest so i carrying the beer inside for bottling wouldn't be good this weekend. I just need to remember to cold crash...

Dry Yeast starter for sour ale

For my starter I decanted most of the beer part of the starter. I left just enough to help get the yeast out.

Dry Yeast starter for sour ale

If you think you need two packets of yeast then make a starter. People reccomend no starters as an extra packet is usually cheaper and easier but not always. I did that with M31 belgium tripel dry yeast and it worked well. I did do a 3L starter as I had read several referances to that being...

240V 5500W low watt density element temperature

The element shouldnt get much above the boiling point of water, 100C as the water is cooling it constantly unless of course you dry fire it by accident then it will glow red... Of course at mash temperatures it will be even lower

    Push wort using Cornelius Keg

Its likley that some keg lid seals are not rated for boiling wort eg 100C so use caution. I have seen black seals that look like normal orings and white ones that are softer. I dont like the idea of preasueised boiling liquid. Also could colapse the keg due to vacume if it accidentally was...
