    Cold crash - freezing

Freezing being generally bad for yeast you might want to look at adding some yeast if you intend to carbonate in bottles. Some yeast may have survived but adding yeast is cheap insurance agaist flat beer.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

All grain Brew day over. 19L into the fermentor. I was going to do 10L so easier on my knee yo get to the fermentation chamber but i forgot and got the default 19L/5g batch. Apeights old dark clone made with gladfields malts. The sample tasted ok for a pre-fermentation sample. I managed to...

    Advice please

I had a few too many suck back accidents using that type of airlock. small amount of starsan was no issue but just got annoying. On bucket fermenters they are bad news as even picking up the bucket can cause suck back. I ended up settling on s type airlocks for my buckets and plastic carboys...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Finially decided to do my planned brew. my knee was too bad yesterday and has settled a bit overnight and through the morning so this is an afternoon brew. Rain outside but dry on my covered deck and 11 degC / 51.8f. Dry enough for the eHERMs om the deck ( positioned to avoid leaks) and just...

Barely any foam when pouring my home brew from the bottle.

Its always a good idea to bottle at least one in a plastic PET bottle as the bottle carbonation can vary time wise due to temperature not bring regulated etc and a PET bottle tells you how it's going with a simple squeze test so you can decide when to transfer to the fridge. I didn't do that on...

Recipe fun. Brewing for fun, the beer is a bonus.

Hi brewers, I was adapting a clone recipe to local ingrediants and modify it to my likeing and realised that all but a few of my all grain brews have been my own recipies. Even my first all grain batch which i did on a freshly constructed eherms was and that came out great and hit all the...

    Is this an infection?

Sucks you got an infected batch. I have had one infected batch and it was in my first fermenter, a coopers kit one without an airlock that burped co2 by the preassure lifting the lid slightly. Not sure how i got that batch infected but i never did trust that fermenters airlock less system and...

    temporary Bottle carbonation chamber ideas

Just decided I will put my 700W convection heater in my small laundry that is pretty small and has insulated outside walls and fiberglass sound batts to the bathroom so well insulated. The benefit is the floor in vynal so any accidental release of beer is contained and its a pretty small room so...

    Poor head retention.

Many early kings and queens also suffered from poor head retention. Sorry, couldnt resist. I don't have issues with head retention on my beers unless i shake a over carbed keg too much to get it back to the right amount. I moved away from shaking kegs to carbonate too. Like yooper I just...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Yep, brewing my first porter. My knee was real bad this week so took today (friday) off work to let the inflamation settle. I found my spare quick connect hose joiner so took my 3 filter water filter ( 1micron sedement + granulated carbon + compressed carbon) out to my deck and put it on the...

Best storage solution for 5 gal batches

It also depends on your budget as to weather you can tolerate a small overhead per brew or a big upfront purchase. You could start kegging and use sugar to prime then use a soda stream CO2 bottle for serving. Not the cheapest CO2 but little upfront cost until you decide to really get into it...

    temporary Bottle carbonation chamber ideas

Usually its warmer or i just warm one room if it gets cold enough. At the moment its probably over 20C during the day so slowly cools off over night but average is just a bit low. The tripel tastes great now but most bottles will be left to age a month or two. I kind of want to get any...

    temporary Bottle carbonation chamber ideas

I don't let the place get too cold but no sense heating if i don't have to so i don't mind if it gets down to 10C overnight. It heats up during the day while I'm at work. It hasnt been that cold since i improved the insulation though. I grew up in a pre 1920 house with no insulation in a colder...

Is this cooler too big for 5 gallon batches?

I have an eherms setup with a 50L/ 52.8qt pot as a mash tun. Its way bigger than needed for 5g batches. Even my 9.5% belgian tripel was pretty low in it. I could definitly do a 10g batch of my tripel in it with room to spare The size isn't an issue for me as herms maintains the heat but like...

    Interesting phone call today.

I was at work today and got a call to my mobile asking to speak to me by my full name which was strange. Turned out it was a detective from the nz police drug squad. Apparently ordering scientific glassware from china raised a few flags lol. The full name was interesting as my packages have...

My worst brew day yet, what's yours?

My worst was setting up on a saturday for a sunday brew. Put my eherms control panel and pots on the covered deck and ran a cleaning cycle through the hoses etc than filled the hlt and was getting ready for bed. Bent over to pick something up and heard a loud pop! Followed quickly by pain in my...
