Stop mold in fermentation chest freezer?

I dont see paper doing much given plastic walls. I would go with silica gel as you can dry it in the oven for reuse. Nice low tech and simple. I haven't had issues yet in my fridge based fermentation chamber yet. The air was really dry on my last two batches but it probably depends on your...

Will an electric brew pot damage/ scorch the surface that it sits on?

I use scrap blocks of wood under my 50L stainless pots when i don't want to harm the surface below them. No major discolouration but the wood i used was old scrap so not looking good to begin with. At 100C it could dry wood out so i use scrap blocks when i place it on my wodden decking to...

    Big coffee mug

i brought a 1/2 gallon novelty coffee mug LOL Makes a 1 gallon batch look a bit small. I brew 2.5g and 5g or 6g batches but if you like smaller thats fine. This is just a huge cup

No brewing for about 3 weeks :-(

Due to my trashed knee starting to get quite bad as the cortisone wares off I need to go easy on it as it barely copes with a weeks work at the moment :-(. I'm not getting more cortisone until 22 June. Winter starting doesn't seem to agree with my knee either. After last week at work my knee...

    beersicle

Yep my beer I froze a while back came out ok too. I knocked the temp probe out myself so no one to blame but myself. Like you my beer and keg both survived. I just let mine warm up slowly too. That reminds me i need to route my sensor into my kegerator through a hole next to the one I...

    New Zealand Pilsner

Motueka makes a nice single hop beer. Ive done it several times with a basic ale malt as a smash and in another brew i added some toffee malt.

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you buy something from an online supplier called justhealthynz. Never brought form a from this sort of place before, The only reason to was for homebrew so it must be healthy right? I'm planning to try brewing some kettle sours with L.Plantarium

    Dealing with no temp control.

You could put it under or on the shaded side of the bus as suggested and then have a heat pad under it for overnight and cover with a blanket since they draw very little power just to prevent it going too low

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

The cloud folders should be a great improvement. Definitely interested in it when it comes out

    Which inkbird controller and why

For your boil kettle you need something with a programmable fixed duty cycle as a temperature setpoint is no good for maintaining a rolling boil. I dont know the inkbird product range but if they use relays they are not suitable for controlling a boil. They can maintain temperature but no use to...

How many times can I use a yeast cake?

As long as you start with a yeast that is not a blend of two yeasts reuse should be good for a reasonable number of generations. The collecting and washing could accidentally cause some selection bias favouring poor floculating yeast cells if you are not careful and at some point that could...

    Don't Do That.

A bit too much went down the cracks and there was oil and grease from bike repairs made in that spot and since it was mostly ale malt by the look i just replaced it. It went everywhere including under the boards my pots were on so decided new malt. I must havr guessed thd lost amount right as...

Tasting and gravity readings. Newbie question

The only time I take multiple readings is when I have a batch with high og or different yeast as others have said. I use bucket fermentors with a tap so i can check relatively easially but I always spray starsan up into the tap both before snd after taking the sample to prevent infections...

    Not enough yeast?

You obviously got good fermentation but you may have got lucky with a very fresh pack of yeast. Its worth playing with the yeast pitch calculators in beersmith to see if you need a starter and how big etc.

    Experieces with Mangrove Jack's M31?

This thing about mangrove jacks yeasts is interesting. They seam to state contamination etc at same levels as the other well known yeast brands so i wounder what causes prople to not like them. They state the drying process means that the yeast is not suitable for harvesting and to buy new and...

    Reusing yeast

Yep 1 cup from a previous batch takes off like a rocket. I did it with US05 and airlock actuvity in under 4 hours. I'm certain a cup of slurry was more than enough for a normal beer on the other hand for a big high ABV beer i guess pitching on the whole cake from a previous brew would help.

    Possible use for CBC-1 Yeast

Sounds like a good idea. I might give it a try when i try doing a barley wine if I think it needs new yeast for the conditioning. Im not sure if you would need to make a starter to get enough yeast to ensure aome gets in each bottle and apply it batch wise like batch priming.

    Alternatives for simple boil controller?

I use a PID in my herms that has a manual mode so it can hold temp in PID mode or boil at a chosen power, handy to have both options. I use 80% as a rolling boil and like the fact i can set it and get the same boiloff every brew day but a mark next to the adjustment pot on the controller you...

    Why such large ga wires?

I used 0.75mm^2 wire for all the relatively low current lines in my control panel as its a cost effective and flexable wire size that csn be protected by a 6A breaker/fuse. To save on multiple wire purchases I brought a 100m roll of it in both black and red as i will use it in other projects...
