    Bland!

That is exactly what the esb i bottled a few days ago tasted like. Different recipe but its pretty normal at this stage. Much of the flavor and aroma will develop in the bottle, and be brought out by carbonation.

1st batch ever:Specific gravity was around 1.3 before I added yeast- am I in trouble?

A dollar store spray bottle filled with star san is the best way to sanitize. Bleach/Chlorine can cause off flavors (rubber/medicinal/chlorine), i only use it for sanitizing the dishes. I use diversol (chlorinated pink stuff) as a CIP cleanser but that is well rinsed and dried before being star...

    Is this beer possible?

Really tempted to try this but I have 4 beers planned and then vacation so its not going to happen anytime soon. Thinking of getting a box of 4 1 gallon jugs from the lhbs and air locks. Start by figuring out a rough grain bill and make a single batch of wort. Then do 4 separate boils of...

Newbie advice for Coopers DIY kit

The ferment will get stuck around 3 to 4 weeks (gravity readings will be the same) this is when you give it a D rest. Many people say to raise the temp slowly to 65F over 3 days and that is enough, others say to just move it to a room temp location for 1 - 3 days. You many not need to do this...

    free PET mini-fermentors

I saw ones like the cheese balls empty in 1 and 2 gallons for $1 or $2 a piece in the house wares section of walmart. I have also seen the larger barrel shaped one with dog treats. But I quite literally would not feed my dog the crap that comes in those. Have not seen human food in them will...

    Vinator alternative

Anybody else doing this? I am about to bottle and had this idea. Normally I put a gallon of star san in the bottling bucket and fill each bottle about 1/5 full shake, drain back into bottling bucket and then shake out excess foam, dip neck in star san, and place upside down to drain. That's...

Newbie advice for Coopers DIY kit

50 Grams of aroma hops (15 minute boil = aroma + very little bittering acids) + plus the IBUs in the Coopers kit is going to make for a very hop forward lager. You didn't say how much water you boiled them in but Beer Smith is telling me 25 Grams of Saaz in 4 liters of water for 15 minutes =...

    Is this beer possible?

Even defatted peanuts (aka peanut flour, aka the stuff they use to make the peanut butter filling in peanut butter cups) still has some fat in it. I don't think this beer would have much head if any to it, but there are many examples of all kinds of nuts in beer listed right in this thread it...

    best place for supplies: Canada

Trolls and Zombie threads run! There is a section for legit retailers. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/vendors/ On that note now that this is resurrected. +100 to hopdawgs.ca. All I can get in town is malt extracts, select hops, coopers and mr beer cans, and coopers yeast. All my sanitizer...

New Hopping method did not go as planned

If you're only simmering you're not going to get very much of the alpha acids out of the hops just the more volatile flavor and aroma oils. You need a full rolling boil for that. So you probably wont be hitting your IBUs from that alone. You can also sanitize the hop sack and put it over the...

Real Ale, lme + hop tea

Just do a boil with your brewing water, the Light LME, and hops. Unless you are going for an IPA type beer 100 grams is overkill. Remember the Real ale is coming with an IBU of (pauses to look that up) 30.43 for the batch. Your gravity will be about the same for 1.5 kg of malt as it is for 1 kg...

First Partial Mash Today.. Instructions say 2.25 qt/lb mash water?

its hard for me to look at multiple threads at the same time in the android app, but im pretty sure the stove top partial mash thread by deathbrewer recomends using the total volume of the boil for the mash water. does the amount of mash + sparge water = your boil vol? i have been wondering...

    Mr Beer's Imperial Pilzner

a true czech pilsner as brewed in pilsen only uses pilsen malt and nobel saaz hops, its what we often call a SMaSH some consider the saaz hop to be the nobelist of hops. it has a wonderful spicy earthy aroma that reminds me more of well cured cannabis (the indica strains, sativas are more like...

    Mr Beer's Imperial Pilzner

that was going to be brew number 5 for me but 3 issues happened with that: 1) with shipping to canada that kit costs about $50 2) It doesnt have saaz hops, which in my mind makes it just a premium type lager. 3) I discovered a near by online retailer that carries grains and was able to get...

    3 beer survey

    1) Black Bear Ale (the original, before Bear Brewing was bought out) or Hobgoblin (not fancy but I like it) 2) Red Stripe or Molson Micro, both techically macros but they are awful and taste almost the same. I don't think I could tell the difference in a blind taste test. 3) A Framboise or...

    Is this beer possible?

Likely ingredients (brackets why i chose this ingredient): Marris Otter malt Caramel 120 or other heavy caramel malt (caramel) Pale Chocolate malt (chocolate / nuts) Defatted peanut paste (nuts) Cocoa powder (chocolate) lactose (nougat) Glacier hops (have a sweet almost candy like quality imo)...

    stopper fell in

Did that with my black berry porter a couple months ago, it was fine at bottling. I'll let you know the final verdict next week when I try the first bottle. The shopping bag trick works great. When I used it the stopper flew out accross the kitchen and my Neapolitan Mastiff caught it in the...
