The (soon to be) great "How's my crush?" Thread!

Thanks Doug, all great intel. Will have to dial in my crush for the next brew. I’ve narrowed the gap and will run just a handful of grain and check it before milling the entire amount. As for the sparge (with my 2 kettle RIMS setup), holding back the sparge water would reduce the total fluid...

The (soon to be) great "How's my crush?" Thread!

No, the gap didn’t change. I have one of the newer MM and the gap is set with a bolt instead of the older, set screw models.

My hopper feeds the grain to towards the center of the rollers but who knows once the grains get underneath.

    Replacement O-Rings for mini regulator

I have one of these Amazon.com: BACOENG 64 Ounce Pressurized Keg Growler, Kegerator for Home Brew Beer with Updated CO2 Regulator: Home & Kitchen and there are 2 o-rings, one at the connection of the co2 cartridge and one where the regulator attaches to the tap. After measuring, it looks like...

The (soon to be) great "How's my crush?" Thread!

Thanks for your reply. No, nothing unusually small in the grain bill. There were some intact kernels which I probably should've addressed prior to mashing. Seems the 2% water conditioning made the husks pliable enough to squeeze through undamaged. I have an All American Ale Works 1/2 hp motor...

The (soon to be) great "How's my crush?" Thread!

I brewed yesterday and conditioned the grain with water @ 2%. My Monster Mill, 2” diameter/ 2 roller was gapped to .025. Crush looked good but there were intact grains… soldiered on anyway. Ended up being way off on efficiency. 1.054 instead of the targeted 1.062. 2 kettle rims setup with no...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I swapped the sample and thermowell ports. Not sure if that would solve your particular issue but I get clean samples this way.

    Cold Crash Question

5 psi may not be enough to counter the “shrinkage” when chilling the beer. I’m not sure what the pressure limits are for the all rounder but I would pressurize higher just to be safe or check occasionally throughout the crash to make sure you’re in positive territory and add pressure if needed.

    Cold Crash Question

I have one of these Spunding Valve. I pressure ferment @ 8 lbs. When cold crashing, I put the gas on @ 3-5 lbs. to add co2 should the "shrinkage" displace the 8 lbs. of pressure already in the conical.

BIAB bag getting sucked down to false bottom

That would defeat the purpose. Bobby's BIAB FB is designed to replace the FB's intended for un-bagged grains.

BIAB bag getting sucked down to false bottom

To minimize dead space under the FB, I rigged it so the FB is under the pickup tube in my Spike 10 gallon MT. Had to remove part of the screen and it takes a little bit of finessing to install and remove but this has been working great for me.

BIAB bag getting sucked down to false bottom

I have one of these Stainless Steel False Bottom for Brew In a Bag (BIAB) - 13'' Diameter coupled with a BrewBag and Blichmann pump. These are offered in several different sizes and height options to suit your system.

How much CO2 is produced during fermentation?

I fill 2, 2.5 gallon kegs. The fermentation co2 goes to the first kegs "beer out" post, then out the gas post and from there, into the second kegs out post, then out the gas post into a jar of Starsan.

How much CO2 is produced during fermentation?

I agree. I’ve stopped filling and purging kegs with Starsan. I now just clean and sanitize the keg and purge with the fermentation co2. After racking the beer to to the keg, I give it a couple of blasts of co2 and begin carbonation. I haven’t noticed any issues with oxidation at all and I...

    Thermal probe connection issues

Agree. Those quick disconnect cable connectors can stress because of the twisting back & forth movements needed to line up the cable to the probe. Seems like one of the more fragile components of an electric brewing system. I have marked the connection points with a sharpie to avoid excessive...

    Tapcooler Counter Pressure Bottle Filler

I like mine. The only issue is releasing the pressure in the bottle. As mentioned above, perhaps the internal spring is too stiff. Seems like I have to unscrew the valve almost all the way for the gas to release.

    Thermal probe connection issues

I’d try some dielectric grease on the contacts. I had the same problem. The grease helped but didn’t solve the issue completely so I just purchased a new cable… problem solved. I believe the female connection loosens up after repeated connecting and disconnecting and can lead to whacky readings.

    Preferred software for brewers

Not really… one quirk (and I believe it’s the same with Brewfather), is when I make any adjustments to my equipment profile, I have to refresh the recipe by changing the profile to another option, then back again to trigger the adjustments. Perhaps this is similar to your scaling issues. I...

    Preferred software for brewers

Mac user… started with BeerAlchemy years ago, then transitioned to Beersmith. Was hearing good things about Brewfather so began running both to compare. Now a premium Brewfather user and very happy. I imported all my recipes easily but had to work on the inventory as some of my ingredients...
