    Spike CF5 lid pressure fail

The liquid volume contracts when temps are reduced. You likely didn’t lose pressure but adding the temperature variable makes conclusions harder to draw. Next time, keep the temp stable.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Going to use Incognito and Spectrum on my next brew. Was thinking about whirlpooling in the conical to avoid leaving some of the oil in the kettle. I may try in the kettle based on your experience. Did you add any hop pellets prior to adding the Incognito as has been suggested?

    Spike CF5 lid pressure fail

Check the orientation of the gasket as mentioned above, square side towards the lid. I also run a thin coating of keglube on the gasket which helped when I first pressure tested my CF5. I also lubricate the screw threads in inside of the clamp for smoother tightening.

    Which BIAB do you like?

As I've mentioned in several other posts, I fashioned my BIAB system based directly on the one Brewhardware sells (the one without the kettle legs). I did build a perforated malt pipe out of PEX tubing that extends down to the false bottom that seems to have helped with mash temperature...

White Labs WLP001 Dry Yeast Coming Soon

    I think I fixed it.

White Labs WLP001 Dry Yeast Coming Soon

Not according to the label for an average gravity IPA. While I understand that 1 pkg of dry yeast will oftentimes suffice, I hate to gamble and risk wasting a batch as a result of under-pitching.

White Labs WLP001 Dry Yeast Coming Soon

Not to mention the recommended pitch rate. You’d need 2 packets for a 5 gallon batch, average gravity IPA. Seems a ripoff. Dry yeast packaging amounts appear to place profit over consumer satisfaction. I wish dry yeast manufactures would offer a 20g packet and charge a little more for it over...

help w NEIPA hops --- Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic +

Wow, 18oz… in a 5 gallon batch? If so, I’ve never added that much but may give it a go. I just purchased some incognito and spectrum from Yakima Valley Hops so looks like I have some math to do to translate these concentrates to the pellet equivalent.

    Trub Dump Issue

Thanks for your reply. I’ve tried co2 hop rousing as well but concerned about purging all that hop aroma out of the conical. I ferment under about 10 psi, have a short path from the racking arm (beer out) through the pump (Topsflo TD-5) to the dump port (beer in), I purge the line with co2 and...

    Trub Dump Issue

Are you using a conical and, if so, do you recirculate the hops? I've been dry hopping at 58-60F and believe that left alone, the hops will quickly settle to the bottom cone, restricting hop utilization. I currently recirculate for 5 minutes, once per day for 2 days before cold crashing but...

All Grain Equipment? Where to buy?

I built a 10 gallon kettle BIAB system based on this design and highly recommend it. Addresses some of the shortcomings of many other systems. Brewhardware is a great source for equipment & ingredients. Good luck. Premium Recirculating Electric (240v) BIAB Package (SPIKE brand kettle) Here’s the...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Yes, I use 2.5 gallon kegs and they are positioned lower than the racking arm. Maybe pull on the keg PRV to see if that helps. If it does, it might point to your spunding valve.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I use ball lock connections as well when racking to kegs. I use gravity and the conical is under 10-12 psi. I use a jumper line (gas post on top of the fermenter to the gas post on keg) to equalize the pressure between the two vessels. My racking tubing is similar to yours… never had a problem...

Duda / Plate Chiller Initial Test

I have a Duda plate chiller… has the same markings… never had a problem. I’ve since gone back to an immersion chiller (Jaded Hydra, with my old IC as a pre-chiller in an ice water bath). This reduces my cleanup time, eliminates sanitation concerns and I can now let the hops swim freely in the...

    New to brewing RO water

I use it, works well. One thing I’ve noticed is that after clicking “auto” to calculate the needed water additions using RO water as the source, the results rarely match the “target profile” numbers. I get fairly close and figure that it’s simply not a 100% precise calculation. FYI, I use the...

Immersion chiller and outflow water temperature

I think you mean the exit water should be 10F-ish "lower" than the wort temperature.

    Self-Contained Systems: Real Work Savers?

I built one based on Bobby’s design. Having had a 2 vessel system, this was the most significant change and overall improvement to my home brewing process. Same end result (albeit less BH efficiency), a real space saver and much easier cleanup. I recently fashioned a Pex recirculation tube with...

    S-04 for NEIPA

How you determine that you have enough yeast cells for pitching when using a refrigerated/frozen slurry. In the past, I’ve stored 5ml of yeast slurry/glycerin vials in my freezer (styrofoam box w/gel packs) but never really knew how many step up starters were needed to build enough yeast cells...

Single Vessel Brewing System Temperature Stability

I just fabricated this addition to the recirculation portion of my BIAB system based on the Breweasy Compact "direct deposit recirculation" system (photo attached). The 3/8" ID Pex tubing extends down to the false bottom and has a total of 14, 5/64" holes (4 holes opposed and 3 holes opposed)...
