Hops - some float, some sink

My question is about hop utilization and efficiency considering cooler DH temps (which tend to quickly sink the hop matter) and a conical fermenter which lessens the amount of surface area once the hops settle into the cone. I recirculate and sometimes rouse using bursts of co2 from the dump...

    Going to take the dive

I agree. I buy from YVH, thinking I am getting above average quality hops but I wonder if that's the case. They all seem to smell fine out of the package but I'm thinking it's the hops that are contributing to my seemingly boring hazy's. I am fastidious with my process and it's somewhat...

    BrewBuilt Hop Bong

I use one with my Spike CF-5. It sits on top of a butterfly valve that is kept open for the co2 blow-off fitting on top during fermentation. I utilize the co2 to purge the serving keg from the bottom up. When it comes to the dry hop, I close the valve, depressurize the hop bong, remove the...

    Going to take the dive

I've brewed many with so/so results over the past 8 years. My process is a closed one to o2 infiltration. 5-8 lb. pressure fermentations, o2 free dry hop using a purged hop bong and closed transfer into co2 purged kegs. Salt adjusted RO water, temperatures dialed in with glycol chiller or...

Trying BRU-1 and Strata for the first time, with Citra

I recently brewed a Bru-1 & Chinook IPA. 8 oz. each for a 5 gallon batch, 10 oz. dry hop split evenly and the rest in a 20 minute whirlpool @ 170F. Result was ok, not great. Seems the Bru-1 contributed to a coconut taste/aroma that is not a favorite of mine. I do think I hit diminishing...

Zinc usage - amount for healthy fermentation

Interesting. What is your exact dosing rate when using this product and how do you split the dose between pre and post fermentation?

16 oz. hops/5.5 gallon batch Hazy NEIPA

Thanks day_trippr! I had forgotten about that Hop Comparison Wizard. Planning to brew this on Wednesday. Will report back once finished.

16 oz. hops/5.5 gallon batch Hazy NEIPA

I have 8 oz. of Bru-1 (2021) and 8 oz. of Chinook (2019)... both kept cold and vacuum sealed in original packaging from YVH. I have never used a pound of hops in a 5.5 gallon batch but want to give it a go. The Bru-1 (Lupomax) is 18% AA and the Chinook is 13.4% AA. My plan is for no boil...

Anvil Brewing Pump XP - first impressions?

Topsflo from Brewhardware https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/topsfloss.htm. Had the Riptide but needed a smaller design for my brew space. I’m a big fan of this pump. Small, powerful (7 GPM) and much quieter than the Blichmann.

Adding a recirc pump to my BIAB setup

This is my setup. Based on Bobby’s Brewhardware design… works great. Topsflo pump is more than twice the GPM (7) of the Anvil (3)… also twice the price. The Anvil might be fine for the recirculation but I wouldn’t expect a strong whirlpool.

    New K-RIMS System question

I had a 2 vessel, K-RIMS setup for years (autosparge, 2 pumps, multiple valves, lots of tubing, etc.). In 2022, I switched to a single vessel BIAB. While I enjoyed brewing on the 2 vessel system, with the more involved, intricate process, I am much happier with a BIAB setup. End product is...

Emptied my first keg. Line and tap cleaning?

Built one of these years ago based on an old post... works perfectly. You'll need to use a Firestone Liquid Post https://www.northernbrewer.com/products/plug-assembly-liq-type-a-challenger-v-vi and I believe the brass adapter is a 3/8" Flare by 3/8" FIP.

    BIAB vs 3 vessel setups

Efficiency will certainly drop with an AIO, no sparge setup (68% BE for me). I too had issues with a stuck mash but no longer. The solution for me was to LET THE MASH SETTLE (after mixing) undisturbed for 10 minutes or so before recirculating. Once you do begin the recirculation, open the...

All NEIPA recipes taste the same

Have you tried the DKO version of this yeast? If so, what do you think... gimmick or legit?

Three way tri clamp ball valve source

Side note... if you order from Brewhardware, make sure you get the correct 3-way valve for your intended purposes. He offers two options and explains in detail how each operates.

Help, Tried Everything I can think of - new set up still foam

Agree with everything mentioned above. It may not apply to your situation but I once had the same issue and it turned out to be pellet hop particles that got trapped in the poppet in the beer out post. I’m sure that’s probably not the case considering you’re working off a commercial keg, but...

    Converting to 3 Kettle Advice

Off topic Bobby but could you provide the details of your exhaust system? I'm looking to move from my home made overhead fan hood to something like yours. I have a window directly above the kettle and something like this would allow me to mount my pulley system directly overhead so I don't...

    Mash paddle decision

For me, it’s a 24” stainless whisk for mash-in and a wooden mash paddle for any decorations.

    Milling grain for BIAB

Do you recirculate the mash in your custom BIAB setup at that .018 crush?
  20. k-daddy

    Milling grain for BIAB

Wow… that’s efficient! I do full volume BIAB with a somewhat fine crush (.028) and have never seen efficiencies anywhere close to the 80-90’s. My “no squeeze” process yields around 68% and, with a good squeeze, low to mid 70’s. I recirculate the mash and have run into stuck mash problems if I...
