    Recirculating hops in conical fermenter

Just remembered you wanted a photo of my setup. Gas fitting used to both fill line/pump with co2, then replacing with beer before hop recirculation. Hope this helps.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Sorry, no picture. Yes, I have the Blichmann TC spunding valve and adjust to 6-8 psi. It’s spring loaded and you adjust by either tightening or loosening the blowoff portion of the valve. Initially I routed the blowoff tubing through sanitizer before going into the kegs to avoid any krausen...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I pressure ferment and use a teflon gasket between the conical and racking arm and never had a leak, and being able to turn the arm with only a slight loosening of the clamp makes things a whole lot easier.

How do you Mash in w/BIAB?

I agree, but for those who cannot control themselves, a large whisk will help to minimize bag damage.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I also have the CF5. I pressure ferment @ 6-8psi and use the fermentation Co2 to purge 2 (in line), 2.5 gallon kegs. I set the racking arm in a horizontal to slightly down position prior to fermentation. For the transfer, I first rotate the racking arm to a 45 degree up position and give a...

How do you Mash in w/BIAB?

I underlet, then bring out the big whisk to insure the mash is well mixed. I do struggle with mash efficiency and cannot seem to get much over 68%, even with my Monster Mill 2”, 2 roller set to a gap of .025”. I don’t sparge but I do squeeze as much wort from the bag.

    Recirculating hops in conical fermenter

This is where I wish I had X-ray vision. Before recirculating, I used the burp method but just wasn’t convinced about the effectiveness. Seems to me that the compacted hop material (I dry hop cold) might not fully release and mix adequately with the beer with just a few blasts of co2 up...

    Recirculating hops in conical fermenter

Good intel… thanks. As a precaution, I check all of my Riptide pump o-rings and lubricate them with keglube prior to the hop recirculation hoping for a good seal. I also don’t run the pump very fast thinking I can avoid any suction that might draw o2 into the loop.

    Recirculating hops in conical fermenter

Yes, whatever is left in the line is dumped... it's not very much at all. As for recirculation time, still learning as I go. Commercial brewery's I've seen on the web talk about turning the tank over once. That would only equate to 5-6 minutes at my scale but that just seems too little. Next...

    Recirculating hops in conical fermenter

I'm not currently brewing so all my equipment is broken down but I set it up just like in the video. I think I get what you mean regarding the additional TC spool but I have no problems purging this setup with CO2 and it's one less part to think about. Additionally, after purging, I flood the...

    Recirculating hops in conical fermenter

I have a CF-5 and copied this technique with good success using a Blichmann Riptide pump. I pressure ferment. I CO2 purge and drop the hops through the 1.5" TC on the lid using a valve, 8" TC spool and Blichmann tri-clamp spunding valve. Be methodical and careful when purging the lines before...

Adding Oregon Fruit Puree (pineapple) to the serving keg?

I used straight centennial - 6 oz. whirlpool @ 190 degrees for 10 minutes - followed the recipe in the video.

Adding Oregon Fruit Puree (pineapple) to the serving keg?

Thanks for the reply. Do you draw from the top or bottom of the serving keg? I just finished fermenting. Plan on cold crashing tomorrow and adding purée to the keg on Wednesday.

How do you save your cooling water?

I purchased this holding tank to capture the RO waste water. The waste water is then used for the initial cooling of the wort by pumping it through a pre-chiller (old IC set in cooler w/ice water) ahead of the PC, then into the emptied MT for system cleanup when finished. Once I fill the MT with...

Adding Oregon Fruit Puree (pineapple) to the serving keg?

I'm going to brew a fruit beer based on the recipe in this video... . I've not seen many who have done this. Most recommend adding fruit puree to a secondary. I'd like to try adding it to the serving keg prior to racking the beer but concerned that once carbonated and chilled, the fruit puree...

    RO system

Another vote for Russ @ Buckeye Hydro. I purchased the adjustable shutoff valve, rigged it for my system and purchased this holding tank to capture the waste water. The waste water is then used for the initial cooling of the wort by pumping it through a pre-chiller (old IC set in cooler w/ice...

    New BIAB False Bottoms

Just chiming in to say how well the Brewhardware FB worked for me. 2 vessel, kettle rims, recirculating mash setup using The Brew Bag. Tightened my mill to .030 with no stuck mash issue whatsoever. Think I'll tighten to .025 for my next brew. Had to customize it so it would fit under my PU...

    New BIAB False Bottoms

Received mine the other day... great fit & finish... looking forward to seeing how well it works with my setup. Just a tip for those choosing to shorten the bolts... screw on a nut (M8) before using the hacksaw, then remove the nut and it will reset the thread that was deformed during the cut.

    Blichmann BrewEasy Temperature Probe Placement

Those tubing clamps are there simply to contain the wort when swapping/draining the tubing. Don’t need them but it makes things a little cleaner. The Blichmann Riptide pumps have an air vent bleed valve on the left side and the fluid level in the MT & BK are always higher than said valve so...

    Blichmann BrewEasy Temperature Probe Placement

I have a side by side, 2 vessel, kettle rims setup using 2 pumps to circulate wort in a “figure 8” pattern. Originally I had the temperature probe placed where the wort returned to the MT (just ahead of the autosparge). I have since relocated the probe to the exit point on the BK close to the...
