    overdried my hops ?

I don't think you can dry them too much. You just do not want to dry them at too high a temperature. You should be OK with your 120f.

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Cracking open the top will releive the pressure but you have no control. Your beers may be over/under carbed and you will not know until the end of the process. The only way to have control of the carbonation is to start over with the bottling process but first you must get back to beer that...

    Sick Magnum

The AC unit sucks in on the sides and blows straight up. The AC does not seem to have any affect on the sick part but the healthy part of the plant at the top gets blow about by the warm air.

    Sick Magnum

I extended the AC drain line to bring the water over to the hops. It is easy to remove so I'll give that a try. The area where the line waters the hops never dries out so even though some of the roots my get proper water, this area 10" from the core rhizome stays saturated.

    Sick Magnum

One of my first thoughts was too much water but the plant is doing well up top and it is sending out healthy new growth at ground level & a few arms in the sick area that look great. But, in addition to the AC condensate it also gets the water that runs off the porch roof. In the lower left is...

    Sick Magnum

What is wrong with this magnum? I have this magnum growing at my office. I planted it near the air conditioner so it is automatically watered by the water from the AC unit. As you can see it is doing well at the top but there is a definite line where something is not right...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

I like to cold condition my beer for 2 weeks. All grain recipes can be consumed sooner and some extract recipes take longer than the 2 weeks to mellow, but 2 weeks is a good starting point. If you are brewing the basic Mr. Beer recipes that use 1 can of extract and booster they seem to really...

Stuck Sparge..break the top crust and carry on

I had a similar problem with my last batch. I think the grain was crushed a bit too much. There seemed to be more flour than usual on top. Once that fine flour settled on top of the grain bed the flow slowed to a very small trickle. Stirring up the top 1/4" to 1/2" took care of the problem...

    Using Homegrown Hops

I'm also wondering about the quantity. If I normally use 1oz of pellets should I go up to 1.25oz of dried cones? I'm trying to figure out if I should vacuum pack them into 1oz packages or something else like 1.25oz.

    Harvest Ale grassiness

I'm a first year hops grower and am also thinking of brewing with fresh hops now that I have some cones of my own... My cones have looked big and ripe for several weeks but had the grassy smell. After a couple weeks the grassy smell went away (cones still on the bine) and I got some hops...

    2009 Hop Harvest

Funny that you got 14oz of cascade. I harvested part of a bine last night and got 14oz (undried) of cascade. --- I looked into a windmill and solar to aerate my 1 acre pond. The windmill was about $1'500 and there is not enough wind around here to make it worth while. Solar was even more...

    Recipes

I do not compete and do not aim to be dead on for a style so I quite often brew with what I have. The beer is always good, but sometimes the right hops does make it great. I have a number of Mr. Beer fermentors which are great for test & experimental batches. They make two gallons so you...

Wholy cow! That bine is well hung.

    when will they be ready?!

This week my cascades are developing a nice aroma and their color is starting to lighten. Some cones have leaf tips turning brown so I might do a small harvest of the really prime ones this weekend. My gut says to let them go longer but I don't like that the tips are turning brown on some.

How do these home grown hops look?

I would not throw away hops that might be good, but on the other hand I'd hate to have a dull batch of beer because I saved a few bucks on surplus hops. You could try making a tea out of some and see what happens. Steep them in hot water for 5 minutes and taste/smell what you've got. Then...

Southern Ohio First Year Hops - First Harvest (Pics)

Nice looking hops. That is impressive for first year.

    Dead hops aren't much fun.

I've had trouble last year when we got into the 100's. No matter how much I watered plants they just could not take it up fast enough. I had to rig sunshades to protect them during the worst periods.

    Aerating with Oxygen

You can get medical regulators from medical supply houses though some require a doctors prescription to buy/rent cylinders of oxygen. You can also use welding regulators, flow meters and cylinders of gas (oxygen) which do not need a prescription. Just look in the phone book under welding...

    Aerating with Oxygen

You are correct it is a medical regulator. I like knowing "how much" O2 is flowing. I have been reading articles online for several days and one will contradict the other. Here is an interesting one: MB Raines, Ph.D. - Guide to Yeast Culturing for Homebrewers - Maltose Falcons Home Brewing...

    No Flowers yet?

All my bines were planted this spring and I have seen a huge variation in development. While all three cascade are going to produce, one is light years ahead of the other two. Two of my other bines have yet to set any burrs and a couple others just did so a week ago, so you may still have hope...
