    SHOULD i USE THESE HOPS?

Use them. I would not keep the bugs but the hops should be keepers.

Move carboy after pitching the yeast?

Take it out dancing, shake it up... Just keep the temperature under control.

    Lone producer

My cascades started producing first and then nugget, magnum and sterling. There was about 2 months between when my cascades and sterling started producing so if your growing season is long enough you might get some more to produce.

Temperature or disturbance a bigger issue in fermentation?

Especially if you are early in the fermentation process I would ferment where you can control the temp. During active fermentation things are strirring around so much I don't thing the yeast will even notice the car trip. Keep the ferementor covered with a blanket or transport in your trunk to...

Anyone use a stainless steel tea ball for hops?

I have used the stainless tea balls when I brew Mr. Beer (2 gallon) sized batches but I think they are too small for 5 gallon batches unless you hapen to pick up half a dozen. I use the larger size and only put 1/2oz of pellets inside to allow room for the wort to flow around. They are easy to...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Which red ale did you brew? Was it the basic Bewitched Red Ale? I find the basic Mr. Beer recipes to be simple and lacking body. Things got much better when I stopped using booster and sugars (cane sugar, corn syrup, honey...). The Mr. Beer recipes that use two cans of malt extract are...

    Testing Lager w/ Ale yeast

Thanks. I'll try doing my tests with S-05. I just ordered some a bunch of grains I've never used before. This should be fun.

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Let your beer ferment a full 14 days and stop taking samples during fermentation, especially after it appears that things have calmed down. When you draw beer out the tap air enters the lid. This is not too bad when fermentation is going strong and producing CO2 which protects the beer but...

    Testing Lager w/ Ale yeast

My father wants me to duplicate Aecht Gehlenferla Rauchbier (a lager) that he brought back from Germany. I have only one fermentation fridge and a long list of ales to brew. What's everyone's opinion of bre wwing my test batches using ale yeast to get the amount of smoke malt, color and hops...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Just measure your keg and take the dimensions when you go fridge shopping. Don't forget to check Craigs List and yard sales. If you have the space used full size fridges can be found pretty cheap (often free for the taking) and will give you room to expand. Most fridges cannot be set warm...

    rooting cuttings in water

I started a Cascade from a cutting earlier this season. Not only did it survive. It is 13 feet tall and I've already harvested an ounce of cones and should get another ounce before the season is done. Right now I'm trying to propogate Sterling with cuttings in potting soil with rooting...

    Fermentation Chamber

I use an old side-by-side fridge for my brewing and keep the fridge side at 68f and the freezer side ends up being normal fridge temp. Good for storing grain?

    Hey yall from NC

Welcome from the big city of Roxboro (north of Durham). I've brewed two cider recipes though the last batch was 3 months ago.

    Tried my very first batch

Twice I have had to wait until fermentation was complete or I transferred to a secondary to get some piece of equipment back. I just let them be and retreive the stuff when it's done fermenting. I'll get banned if I mention the profanities I curse when something goes "plop" into the fermentor...

    Some questions about oxidation

CO2 is heavier than air so even the slightest amount of CO2 will lie on top of the beer providing protection. Opening the lid of your fermentor is a no no because the slightest air current can disturb the protective layer of gas and introduct some air (with oxygen).

I actually got flowers during year 1

Hops growing is a lot more fun when you see that you might have something to harvest even if it is just a few cones. Soon you will be planning what to brew with YOUR hops.

I found something unexpected in the Beercan?

15 years ago I worked for a company that made bottling and container handling equipment. There was a big lawsuit agains a soda company when a foreign object found inside a can. We did a lot of work refitting the bottling/canning plants to keep the containers away from the workers. Machines to...

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Yes, you can use the yeast packs intended for 5 gallon batches. I have also known people to split the pack to make two Mr. Beer batches. I have avoided using the expensive liquid yeasts on Mr. Beer batches because I could not bring myself to use $6 of yeast to only make 2 gallons of beer (I'm...

    Drying temp too hot?

I have a cheap dehydrator that has no fan and no temp control. I was getting up to 148 with the baffle in the full open position (the coolest it will run). When I removed the baffle it held so more heat could escape it did run cooler but was very inconsistant. The center was running 80 while...
