Beginner finally buying equipment for all grain brewing

Most pre-built mash tuns have false bottoms, which are great for fly sparging but are unnecessary for batch sparging. Not knowing what is on the inside of that HLT, you might be able to simply thread a bulkhead on and then thread a bazooka type screen into that. Adventures in Homebrewing can...

Is boiling the caps a bad idea?

I also simply drop mine in Star San, however, most breweries and a lot of homebrewers don't sanitize caps at all, so I wouldn't worry a whole lot.

Beginner finally buying equipment for all grain brewing

Note that the mash tun that you linked to isn't a mash tun, it's a hot liquor tank to hold sparge water if you're fly sparging. You'll need to add something to separate the wort from the grain like a bazooka screen, stainless steel braid, or false bottom.

Uneven distribution of priming sugar in 5 gal batch

This is what I do as well. Theoretically, the swirling motion should mix the priming solution sufficiently, but after experiencing what you described, I started stirring with a sanitized spoon once the beer is racked to my bottling bucket. As long as you stir gently and don't splash the beer you...

Is a 50' immersion chiller overkill for 5 gallon batches?

I have a 50' 3/8" chiller for 5 gallon batches. It's great. It chills very quickly. I'd say it isn't necessary, but is by no means overkill.

How do you keep pipettes clean and sanitized?

I just use a stainless 1/8 teaspoon to grab refractometer samples. Much easier to clean and sanitize.

    Brewing with Kids?

There are insane people who will accuse you of all kinds of things. Many would also say that you are educating her, which presents an opportunity for you to make sure she understands what can happen if you don't treat things like burners, large pots of hot liquid, and alcohol (not by giving...

    Forgot to Sanitize Flask

Isn't Nottingham dry yeast? For reasons I can't explain, I know that it is not necessary to make a starter for dry yeast. We obviously can't say for sure whether or not it will be a problem, but I hope it works out. Nothing to do but wait and see.

Question about possible damage to freezers using temp controllers

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Just set a reasonable temperature differential. Don't try to hold it to the exact temperature. I've left mine at a 2 degree differential, which gives my freezer a decent run time. A cycle delay wouldn't be of concern in my experience...it definitely takes...

    Morebeer! Economy Pot

I'm not sure about the picture, but I can tell you that it doesn't seem to be possible to buy metal components without scratching these days. I know that metal scratches easy and all, but you'd think new, it would be pretty minimal. Everything is cheaply made. My Boilermaker came with a...

    Shank Problem?

Hello, I purchased a draft tower and one of the shanks has two big chips in the flat part that the faucet seals against. I'm new to kegging, but I can't imagine that a faucet will seal against the shank if there is a small channel that beer can leak out. Can anyone comment on whether it is...

Possible to purchase a draft tower that isn't scratched up?

Good news! I got my replacement today and it looks great. Again, I'm realistic, so I know that there will be some minor imperfections since they're handled with tools and such, and there are, but there aren't any chips in the finish or anything like that. They wrapped it up extra good for...

Possible to purchase a draft tower that isn't scratched up?

They told me they would stand behind it. The original two (from the kegerator manufacturer) were chrome plated brass, so they looked terrible with bits of brass showing here and there. The stainless one at least looks better, but it's frustrating that it has deep scratches, as in gouges (you...

Possible to purchase a draft tower that isn't scratched up?

The subject says it all...the tower my kegerator came with was scratched up and chipped. They sent me a replacement, same story. They wouldn't send another. I ponied up and ordered a stainless steel tower but it too arrived scratched up. They're going to send me a replacement, but is it not...

    making a yeast starter?

At 78 points you'll need a pretty big starter that might require more than a single step. As much as it sucks, I'd probably suggest delaying your brew day.

full boil vs partial boil. How much difference does it really make?

When I moved to full boil, I found the end result to be better and I haven't come across anyone who has ever said differently once they tried it. It was also nice to get more accurate color in my beer as well. Full boil extract batches also serve as a good stepping stone if you might be...

    Gravity readings using the "thief"

Ugh, I got the thief, tried to use it once, haven't touched it since. My hydrometer kept sticking to the sides and it leaked pretty good. A glass thief and sample jar work much better for me.

FREE FastRacks - Beer Bottle Tree Alternative

I picked up a 2 tray/4 rack setup and I'm really impressed. They are very well made. I was surprised at how heavy they are. I've been looking to get away from dishwasher sanitizing and these should help a lot. I'll be bottling in a few weeks, so we'll see how it goes. In the meantime, my wife...

Propane Burner that can be converted easily to natural gas

Blichmann makes a conversion kit for their burner. Next time the plumber is here I just might need to get a natural gas line run to the garage. It'd be nice to not have to keep track of how much propane I have left.

    Starter Stepping Question

Awesome. Sounds like I'm on the right track. I would have liked to start it yesterday to give a little extra time but two things stopped me...laziness, and the uncertainty that I would be able to get Friday off, but mostly the laziness part!:o
