Oak Aged Mead - Tastes like Bourbon!

I am thinking of starting to make a mead, and the bourbon flavour idea intrigued me. What was the full recipe that you used, and any suggestions for a new mead maker?

has anyone committed this siphon cardinal sin

I'm sure that would make sense if I was there to watch it in action, but that seems way too complicated for me.

has anyone committed this siphon cardinal sin

I've used my mouth to start a siphon a couple of times where I just got lazy and the beer turned out fine. It probably had a higher likelihood of getting contaminated, but the chances still aren't that large.

    Recovering from hail

I don't have a solution, but I feel your pain. My garden got hit three times this week from the same storms. My hops seem to have weathered it better than my tomatoes and jalapenos.

    Force Carbonation at Altitude?

Thanks guys. Like I said, I know I read it somewhere, but of course you can't believe everything you read on the internet. I will rememeber, that I need to drink faster at altitude to keep my beer from going flat, and belch more often to avoid explosive gastric distress.

    Force Carbonation at Altitude?

I swear I read this somewhere, but I can't find it with the search function. Does anyone know what adjustment to pressure I need to make to force carbonate my kegs at altitude? I live at 6,000 ft. in Golden, Colorado. If I remember correct, I am supposed to increase my PSI from the...

How long is a yeast starter good for?

Thanks, I'll throw mine in the fridge and hopes the water main gets fixed soon.

How long is a yeast starter good for?

I just started using yeast starters with my last brew. This time, I made a starter on Friday night. I planned to brew on Saturday. Unexpectedly, my wife invited guests over, so I waited till today. Now, the water main on my street broke and I can't brew until it is fixed. How long can my...

    Filling Growler

Check out the sticky for "We no need no stinkin beer gun." The same method works for growlers, just use a bigger stopper that fits the growler. I use that method for both bottles and growlers and it works great.

First extract, but not from a kit: Dunkelweizen

Looks good to me. I made a Dunkel-Weizen (Which turned out to be one of my favorite brews) that was similar. I used some Black Patent (same amount as the chocolate malt) to darken it up. I also used 1 oz Hallartau, but kept 1/4 oz for flavoring. I am not sure that was necessary. I also...

    Odd aftertaste - sour/astringent?

This has happened to three of the last four beers. The other one is an arrogant bastard clone that has such strong flavors, I'm not sure the off taste would be apparant. I will go to extra efforts to clean my equipment before my next brew, but I thought I had done a pretty good job of...

    Odd aftertaste - sour/astringent?

I have been brewing for over a year w/ around 12 batches made so far. Lately, three batches that I have made have a sour or astringent aftertaste. I am not sure how to describe it. I make extract beers w/ specialty grains steeped at around 155-160 degrees. The pale ales and IPA's don't...

    Do Hops attract bees?

I have been considering growing hops in my garden. However, I am allergic to bees, and a friend of mine told me that bees are very attracted to hops plants. Two questions. (1) is this true? (2) is there a variety of hops that bees are less attracted to?

From Golden, CO - Not a Coors drinker

Thanks. Beautiful town. Always smells like beer (which is ok even if it is Coors).

Also, how do I get my messages to include the list of my current projects (i.e. primary, secondary, bottled , kegged, etc.)?

From Golden, CO - Not a Coors drinker

Golden City Brewery advertises itself as the second largest brewery in Golden, and they sell out of their garage. Counting local homebrewers that I know, I can probably claim to be the 10-15th largest brewery in Golden. We'll never catch up to Coors, but we can try. Started brewing about a...
