    Chi Company

Looking to buy a bunch of new equipment for my keezer build. Anybody used Chicompany.com? With good/bad results? How about shipping time? I like their selection of stuff, but I have had bad experiences in the past with other distributors. Tried search function, but couldn't find another...

What beer would you describe as the beer that 'awakened' you...?

Theakston's Old Peculier was the first beer that got me to really understand that beer could taste better than yellow water. I'm fermenting an "Old Pecilierish" clone right now.

    When to add flavor?

Last month I made my first batch of mead. My plan is to split it up at some point into 1 gallon bottles and flavor each differently. My planned styles are: oaked, pepper, dry hopped, plain, and one other. The fermentation seems to be slowing down now. It has been 3 weeks. When do you...

    Old Peculier Clone

JamesNW, I am also in Denver and I have a batch of Old Peculiarish beer in the secondary. I have opted for a long aging process and expect to bottle it in a few weeks. I'd be interested in a comparison. I can find the original at Applejack's liquor store. PM me and maybe we can get together...

    Hello from the Denver area...

I'm out in Golden and know a couple other homebrewers in Lakewood. Welcome. You should consider planting some hops to go along with your grape vines. I just started growing hops for my own brewing and I love it. Good luck and feel free to join the subgroup: the CO_Dependency for brewers in...

    Hops dried on the bine?

Mine was a very healthy, green plant with almost ready to pick hops. The next day, the entire plant looked dead. I'm sure it had to do with moving the pot and plant, I just can't believe it died off that quick. I just sealed up the hops that I removed as an emergency harvest. I'll try them...

    Hops dried on the bine?

This is my first year growing hops. I had a very healthy first year nugget plant. I have grown it all year in a large plastic pot with a free standing trellis. I harvested about an ounce of hops last week. Two days ago, I moved the planter to another part of the yard because swmbo wants...

    Thoughts on Northern Brewer kits?

That's why I don't buy the kits. But since I am fairly new, I like to start with a proven recipe and then do something to change it to make it mine. I have been looking at the Northern Brewer recipes recently to decide if I want to use them as a base recipe to start from. Sounds like no...

How many cones in an ounce?

Damn. I was hoping for an easy (read cheap) way out. Thanks for replies.

How many cones in an ounce?

I am too cheap to buy a decent scale and this is my first year growing hops. I am about to harvest a couple hundred cones. Is there a decent rule of thumb about how many dried hops make up an ounce? I know there are a lot of variables, but a rough estimate will help out a lot.

    Thoughts on Northern Brewer kits?

I was looking at some of hte Northern Brewer kits and they appeared to be pretty good, but I don't have any experience with them. Anybody had any real bad (or really good) experiences with the recipes they use for their kits?

    Wet hop ale - suggestions?

I've got my GABF tickets, but I can't find a IPA recipe. Wanna post it just for me?

    Substitute for Muntons Old Ale

Thanks for the info. I will try to do it w/ a combination of LME to get the right starting gravity and then I will add another ounce of hops for the full boil to up the bitterness. The fuggle hops I have are a lower AA% than what the recipe calls for, so I think and extra ounce should make up...

    Odd aftertaste - sour/astringent?

I replaced all of the o rings and seals on my kegging equipment and did a thorough cleansing with a beer line cleaner. I have also stopped squeezing out the grain bags and have started rinsing the grains after steeping with hot water. I have not noticed the problem with any of the last 3...

    Substitute for Muntons Old Ale

I am doing an Old Peculiar clone out of the How to Homebrew Magazine. Ingredients: 3.3 lbs. John Bull Amber malt extract 3.3 lbs. Muntons "Old Ale" malt extract 8 oz. Lyle’s black treacle syrup 2 oz. malto-dextrin 4 oz. wheat malt, 2° Lovibond 4 oz. light caramel malt, 20° Lovibond...

    Substitute for Muntons Old Ale

I am planning to brew up a recipe that calls for (among other ingredients) - 3.3 Lbs of Munton's "Old Ale" malt extract. I believe I read somewhere that this is a hopped extract. If I just want to use a basic extract, does anyone have a suggestion for what type of LME and how much additional...

How's this look for a scotch ale

I also like smoke flavor in my scottish ale. My last one had 5 oz of Peated Malt in 5 gallons. I thought it was about right, but many others felt it was too smokey. I would definitely hesitate to use more than 4 oz in a 5 gallon batch in the future.
