    Dry Yeast Packs, storage time?

If you put it in the freezer, almost infinite. SWMBO has 5yr old bread (dry) yeast that is perfectly useable. It shouldn't be that much different.

    hop growing up north

It would be a PITA, but is it possible to tarp the plants for a while each dat to simulate darkness. That may perhaps stimulate the plants to produce more reliably.

First brew. I think I eff'd up already

My wife activates bread yeast @ 110 deg. Even tho it is bread yeast, those critters are probably not that much different from beer yeast--I was i a hurry to make pool league & pitched in the 80s & all came out fine. Good luck.

    Whoa Nottingham works fast

I am sitting at the comp w/ a pale ale made w/ notty & dry hopped w/ cascade. Was fermented in the 70s& went at least to 75. Tastes remarkebly like a Third Coast Beer, maybe not quite so strong on the hops & no off flavors.??? So don't worry at this point, wait & see what comes out. I did...

When can I split the root?

As others said, when dormant is definitely the best time to do such things to most plants & hops are likely to be the same. But, I read elsewhere here that people have started growing new plants by using vine cuttings & dipping them in growth hormone before planting/rooting in water. That...

    Cats killed my crop!

+1 on the chicken wire, it works! I used it to keep my SWMBO's cat out of some of my plantings--worked like a charm. The bines are small enough to grow right thru it too.

    MLT question

I have been working out what I need for an all grain system & could use some input/suggestion. I have available a slotted piece of SS that fits tightly in my cooler just above the drain & would work well for holding the grain bed. I also think it may do well dispersing the water as it is...

    Baking yeast in a pinch?

Justin--Have read several statements @ what may or may not happen, but no one has confessed that they may have done something similar. Well, I did it w/ a litght amber ale. Nothing horrible happened, also nothing spectacular. It turned out as a pleasant somewhat sweet fruity beer. Friends &...

    Secondary temps--Search gives conflicting info

Have found conflicting info while searching for info on secondary temps. Some items say the temps should be warm/the same as the primary fermentation while other items state that cooler is ok???? Have moved a light ale from primary @68-70 degrees to the secondary in basement at @55-58 degrees...

FAQ: Aluminum Pots for Boil Kettles?

I have some reservation @ the flavor comments--Have just cracked open a still somewhat young pale ale brewed in an Al pot. The ale has a definite metallec aftertaste. The pot was a well used canning pot so was not unseasoned. Have never has such flavors w/ the ceramic coated canning pot I...
