    Cologne Malt in a Helles

No sulphuric at all, although it threw sulfur during fermentation.

    Cologne Malt in a Helles

Interesting, this would be my first ever obvious or even noticeable infection. I am cold crashing and carbonating it now. I will see how it tastes in a week.

    Cologne Malt in a Helles

No more like the smell driving by a Wisconsin dairy farm, which this week wouldn’t smell at all. But not strong just enough to make you go ew.

    Cologne Malt in a Helles

Hi I used about 8% Cologne malt in a Helles I brewed 2 weeks ago. I was trying to add some of the raw grain flavor to the beer. Anyway tried a sample today and am getting a crap flavor I have never gotten in a beer before. By crap I mean a close to poop aroma and flavor. It’s not real strong but...

    Refractometer error when reading SG.

Yes I calibrated it. The SG scale just seems to be wrong. This has agreed with my hydrometer for brewing to within a few thousandths.

    Refractometer error when reading SG.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AOCKWMU/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 The above link is to my refractometer and the scale shows 1.115 SG being approximately equal to 29.8 Brix.

    Refractometer error when reading SG.

To read SG I used a refractometer and what should have been about a 5 gallon batch diluted to 1.115 at a bit over 4 gallons. I now believe that using the refractometer resulted in an error and...

    5 liter flask capability.

The timing is not going to be right for doing stepped starters. It’s my wife’s beer and we started the planning a bit late.

    5 liter flask capability.

Hi. I’m going to be brewing a big lager and was wondering how big a starter can be made in a 5 liter flask. I’ll be using a stir plate and fermcap. 4 liters should be doable can you actually do a 5 liter in 5 liters? Thanks

    House Yeast Culture Questions

Disclaimer, I am not a micro biologist. 1. No. One of strains of yeast will out compete the others in your environment and become the dominant yeast pretty quickly. 2. For die off see 1. 3. Yes. The best way to do a mixed culture yeast is to main the yeasts separately and then mix to pitch...

    Freezing slurry?

Hi. I’m about to start storing yeast and would like to go simple and just add glycerin to yeast slurry and freeze. How would I go about ensuring the sanitation of the glycerin? Could you just boil it? Any help would be appreciated.

A 47 for an over the top IPA. No medal. I wonder if they were scoring on a different scale.
