American Porter Bee Cave Brewery Robust Porter

Hi Ed, Thanks for the recipe. I tweeked it a little bit to get an OG of 1.088 and just racked it onto 8 oz of Hershey's Cocoa powder and 2 vanilla beans. The specific gravity at racking (3 weeks in primary) was 1.024. I noticed on page 7 of this thread that you said that the maltodextrin...

American Wheat Beer Summer Citrus Wheat

I am drinking this one right now. It turned out great. The amount of orange is just right. Thanks for the recipe. I will definitely brew it again. Next time I will time it better for summer :-)

    Where to go in Portland

Personally I would not miss Bridgeport or Laurelwood Brew Pub. But it is pretty hard to go wrong with most any of the pubs in town. You can get to most nearly everywhere with the public transportation in Portland. Just pick a pub an area of town and stay awhile!

Will my brewing come to a screeching halt if I become a dad?

Many people have already said the most important thing...your family is your priority. If your wife senses that you are shirking your new family duties then she will be very resentful of your home brewing. I am the father of 17 month old twins. I used to golf and do many other things, but you...

    Improved boiling on the stovetop!

Just a quick clarification. The picture is of my 8 gallon pot. The 5 gallon pot is not pictured.

    Dessert Beer

Thanks for the advice! The recipe was from another brew club; admittedly I was a little lost with all the additions. Thanks for simplifying things. Any particular type of hop you would suggest?

    Dessert Beer

I am looking to make a dessert beer that taste kind of like an alcoholic chocolate chip cookie. (It seemed like a good idea when I thought it up late night???) Essentially it's a sweet stout with chocolate malt. I want the chocolate flavor, but very little if any coffee flavor. I would...

    BIAB bag sparge

I have been doing your exact method for my last 5 all grain batches (5 gallon batches). The key for me to get 75% efficiency was twofold. Number one have your sparge/mashout water hot enough so that when you add the grain bag the temperature equilibriates about 170* (never had a problem with...

    Anybody brewing in this heat?

With 2 16 month old kids and a baby sitter in grad school, I don't get a whole lot of chances. I brewed a Summer Citrus Wheat (from the recipe section) today because it was now or never. I use Death Brewers All Grain Stove Top method and it turned out pretty darn good. Some how my OG was...

    Star San and Dog bowls

Just curious, but where did you hear that the vaccine is only 50% effective? Also there are multiple organisms that can produce Kennel Cough.

    Star San and Dog bowls

Jackson, I never meant to imply that you were not a legitimate business or didn't operate a good facility. All I wanted to do was let you know what I had found to work after years of practicing in the field. As far as the bleach fumes, what dilution are you using? Typically if you use a...

    Star San and Dog bowls

Do not use Star San for cleaning anything in your facility. Your concerns are far different than what the makers of Star San made the product for. You should be concerned with preventing the spread of viruses (Parvo, Distemper, Corona, and Parainfluenza), bacteria (Bordetella, Campylobacter...

    Improved boiling on the stovetop!

I ordered off the internet from a company called "Second Skin Audio." I have never seen it in a store. Just type in Heat Wave Pro on any search engine and it should come up. Be sure to get the "Pro" version as the regular "Heat Wave" product has facing on only one side. Nine square feet of...

    Improved boiling on the stovetop!

I found a fairly cheap and effective way to insulate my 8 gallon brew pot and not have it get burned from my gas stove. I used a product called Heat Wave Pro. It is a thermal accoustic barrier product made of natural fibers (no fiberglass) and is faced on both sides with aluminum wrapping. It...
