How many #s of grain can fit in a 5gal MT?

Could you expand on that a bit? Low efficiency? Could that be overcome if I vorlauf a lot and maybe do some extra sparging? I batch sparge, FWIW. I'll probably end up borrowing my friend's MT and splitting the grain between the two. I'd hate to end up with a Quad at 5% because my efficiency...

How many #s of grain can fit in a 5gal MT?

Hey y'all, I just ordered the Austin Homebrew Belgian Quad (Westy/St. Bernardus clone). It comes with just over 17 pounds of grain. I don't know if that's gonna fit in my MT. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I could borrow a friends MT and just do side by side mashing?

Anyone know how to disable the automatic shutoff on a turkey fryer?

Do this: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/turkey-fryer-burner-timer-interlock-mod-123043/ It worked for me, and many others like me.

Just finished my 2nd batch - Pumpkin Ale

I get some bottles fully carbed at 2 weeks, but it's a crap shoot. Some are, some aren't. Try to wait the full 3 weeks before cracking one. It sucks to drink a beer that you worked so hard on and it would have been better a week later. Be sure to refrigerate them 2 whole days before opening...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

Put me down for one. Didn't even make it past my first brew. I'm more careful now. 608

    Beginning my addiction

I did a gravity reading yesterday (8 days in primary) and I always taste my samples. That said, I'd definitely recommend adding more cinnamon and nutmeg. I can barely taste it. Perhaps it will be more pronounced when it's carbonated, but I've noticed that Midwest seems to err on the side of...

If you had to HATE one thing about Homebrewing...

Whenever I make extract, this thing falls off the bottle and into the kettle. I'm 3 for 3. I keep saying I'll remember to take it off next time.

    Beginning my addiction

I did 30oz of pumpkin and added it at the end of the boil, per the Midwest instructions. They said 15oz for a hint of pumpkin or 30oz for a more pronounced flavor. I also added a bit extra brown sugar, mainly because I don't like having to drink 3 homebrews to get a buzz going. MY OG ended up...

    Beginning my addiction

Ha! you sound like me! I bought the groupon too + Autumn Amber Ale. It's delicious, let me tell you. I fermented a bit high because I'm in Florida, but it still tastes as good as most craft beers. I did a blind taste test with Barrel Trolley's Amber Ale and some other Amber Ale out of Atlanta...

    Pretty good Craig's List score

    I snagged 24 1L swingtops, a 6 gallon glass carboy, 2 3-gallon glass demijohns, ~75 empty 12 oz bottles and a 5 bucket chest freezer for $65 this week :) I love craigslist.

Question: Son of a Fermentation Chiller

Hi All, I'm starting to get serious about building a son of a fermentation chiller, or a fridge-powered insulated box of some sort (like this one) for my fermentation. But there's a twist. Are you ready for the twist? Ok, here's the twist. I live in South Florida, and I want to keep it in my...

    silly airlock question...

My first batch (Midwest autumn amber ale, extract) went into primary about 15 days ago. Fermentation, or at least airlock bubbles started the next day, but by later that evening, had pretty much stopped. OG was 1.048 (right on target) and I took a reading last week at 1.018 (almost there)...

    Beer Garden Tables

Don't most homebrewers usually have 200 beer garden tables? All the ones I've met usually have at least that many!

Too long ferment for an IPA?

My understanding is that IPAs were designed to make the 4-6 month sea voyage from England to India and still taste good. I think you're in the clear.

    Cleaning/Sanitizing Copper

Howdy folks, I found a wort chiller for sale on craigslist, but the pic shows it may be a bit corroded. I won't actually know until I go check it out. So, is it possible to clean and sanitize copper? I don't want my beer to taste like pennies or copper polish. Or is it not worth looking at?
