    Experience with Northwest Hop Farms?

Just wanted to give a big thumbs up 👍 👍👍 to Northwest Hops! I ordered several pounds of prior years hops during a recent closeout sale. I figured for the price it was worth a try. I was quite surprised that the package arrived 2 days faster from Canada than my most recent package from Yakima...

    Monitoring temps on the foundry

Have any of you found a good hack for setting your temperature when doing a no sparge mash? I’ve noticed that the top third of the Foundry when mashing with 7 to 8 gallons of water can be as much as 10° colder than the PID temperature setting. I just tend to increase the temp about 5° above my...

    Tannins in my Bitter….

These are all very helpful and interesting thoughts! Thanks, everyone! Sitting here, enjoying a pint of what I have now suitably named “DOGBITE BITTER” and I do think I have a case of hop bite as approached to tannin astringency How to Tell If It's Hop Harshness vs Tannin Test Tannins...

    Tannins in my Bitter….

This was the water profile. Yep. Distilled water. I use a little stainless steel dressing container, scoop out some mash and in about 5-10 minutes it’s down to 85-ish degrees. Figure that close enough to room temp for a pH reading? Interesting thought about the Target. Never used it before but...

    Tannins in my Bitter….

I can’t recall if I calibrated it or not, but usually do so, I’m guessing I did? Probably guilty about being impatient, however. Most likely did not wait a full 20 minutes to take a pH reading. 😬 Also cannot recall if I re-checked the pH after adding the acid, but I’m usually pretty OCD...

    Tannins in my Bitter….

pH was 5.4 in the mash. At least thats what my pH meter told me. 🤔 It was around 5.6 and I used 1.25 ml of lactic acid to get her down to 5.4. I use the Brewfather water calculator which seems pretty accurate but maybe next time I’ll try Bru ‘n Water. I’ll also pay extra attention to the pH...

    Tannins in my Bitter….

Common wisdom over the years seems to indicate that squeezing the heck out of your brew bag does not tend to cause extraction of tannins Well, Here’s a bitter I recently brewed. It’s good but definitely has a distracting tannin aftertaste. I did brew in a bag method in my 10.5 anvil...

Best non-White Labs yeast for a Belgian Pilsner?

Never had Jupiler believe it or not? Maybe something along the lines of Bavik Super-Pils? Definitely a Pilsner but has some “Belgian” Character to it?

Best non-White Labs yeast for a Belgian Pilsner?

Hey all. I was planning on brewing up a Belgian Pilsner soon but my LHBS doesn’t stock WhiteLabs yeast ( who makes a Belgian Pils specific strain) . Any suggestions for best yeast to use for a Belgian Pilsner? I do have a few sachets of 34/70 on hand 🤷‍♂️ Thanks!

    Vienna lager?

I’ve brewed this one several times subbing the Pils and Munich for 100% Vienna. 34/70 yeast. Super tasty. https://recipe.brewfather.app/WcSaHRAiAtFo3E8RS74LAOEbZX9Uoo

Consistently falling short of OG on Anvil Foundry

Or better yet! Splurge and get your own grain mill. ( really not that expensive TBH) My efficiency on my Foundry went from the high 60s to consistently around 80 once I started crushing my own grain! 🍻
