Didn't expect the local ASDA to sell craft beer...

... but they do! Went to buy some random beers and was expecting just commerical mass brewed stuff. However they sell lots of little local microbrewery ales. So I ordered a few. I just wasn't expecting a huge supermarket like ASDA to sell these kinds of beer. Also spotted, though...

    Super Noobie question (extract instructions)

This depends on the hydrometer. Mine actually says to read at the top of the meniscus.

    Newbie question re hydrometer use

Best to lift it out from the top with a turkey baster, wine theft or syringe. You don't need to sample every day. Once when the activity stops, about 1 week, then again before bottling or in 3 days to see if the reading has changed. If you buy a graduated cylinder for the hydrometer you only...

    Bottle fermented?

My GF asked if I wanted anything from the beer shop, she was going for cider. I said, just a handful of random beers please :) Never knew what I'd get. I got: An Erdinger Weifbier.... and I opened it, poured it and went, "WTF?", it's cloudy.... okay. I'd already read it was a wheat beer...

    advice on lagering please

I also thinking an old second hand fridge (off one of them recycling websites). If I'm only doing 1 batch of lager at a time, I can adjust the temperature between ferment and lagering. Just need to make sure 1 5.5gl FV fits in. :)

    advice on lagering please

What an awesome idea Revvy. I happen to have a aircon unit on wheels that come out for the hottest humid days of summer here where it can get to a shocking 26C and 95% humidity, either is fine, try to sleep with both... needs aircon. So I could rig a vaguely well sealed wardrobe, put the...

Oh dear, getting serious, bulk ordering.

A side point, and I know this has already happened in the US, but that price per litre is cheaper than petrol/gasoline here now. Goes to the saying, don't drive, drink!

Oh dear, getting serious, bulk ordering.

    It gets worse! Doing some quick sums... Order: £110 Litres: (22litres * 4)+(9 litres * 2) = 106 litres, £1.03 / litre At ~10 litres a week, that's 11 weeks beer at tenner a week. Cost of the "local super market default lager" here is around £1.89 (£10 / (440ml x 12cans)) a litre. So a...

Anybody concerned about this hobby on their health?

The land of the free becomes the land of the fat. I don't think us Ulster people are that far behind you though.

Oh dear, getting serious, bulk ordering.

So, I was putting in an order for my first lager. Ingedients came to £13 for a 2gl batch.... but as it was over 1kg, shipping was £5.95. Then a light bulb lit up and I realised I'd be sitting at the PC in a weeks time ordering my next 5gl batch (circa £25) and another £6 to £10 shipping. So I...

    my most challenging obstacle

It depends on how bad the home brew is.... if it's bad enough people might take the contents of the donation jar as compensation!

Anybody concerned about this hobby on their health?

I have found that I can drink 6 cans, (or even 8!) on a week night and get up for work the next day with only a mild hangover. Similarly I can drink 2-3 litres of home brew and only have a mild hang over (assuming I have eaten and got at least 6 hours sleep). However if I go to the pub after...

Anybody concerned about this hobby on their health?

In the UK we have the "unit" system. A unit of alcohol is approximately 20ml. Whats that in fl.oz? It is used as a gauge for the drink driving limit and for healthy drinking recommendations. It is also used to describe what is too much. The current drink drive limit is 2 units. Which...

    my most challenging obstacle

Brew a batch in a clear Demijohn and leave it in the sun in front of the window. Keg it (with a release valve) after 4 days. Invite them to taste it after 1 more day. That should put a few off. If it doesn't try again and add chilli.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just did a batch of Red Ale (my 66.6 Red recipe), hopefully it will turn out as nice as the first one.

    Yes it's young... but...

Thanks guys. Every beer is different. The beer before this I sampled at 1 week and immediately moved to the drinking shelf as it was perfectly fine and perfectly carbed. The one before that tasted okay (just young) at 1 week and rubbish (very sharp tang) at 2 weeks, so it's sitting on the...

    Yes it's young... but...

I ran out of chilled beer last night and for some silly reason decided to taste a bottle that was only bottled on Saturday. I was my first full recipe, no kit, no sugar - Extract Red Ale with WYeast Irish Ale yeast. Yes, it tasted young, but it also has a strange peppery/spicy tone to the...

Is Stella Artois crap to anyone else?

I did a bit of reading up on Stella and it turns out it's 'premier lager' rep comes from long ago when in the UK most beers were brewed to 3%. Stella was brewed to something like 5.5% and considered a 'premier' beer. It cost enough anyway! So it was considered a 'premier' European lager, like...

1-piece vs 3-piece air lock:which do you prefer?

Maybe we are talking about a different S lock. The ones I use there is no possibility of the liquid being sucked back into the beer, unless... you over fill it.

1-piece vs 3-piece air lock:which do you prefer?

I have tried, the S-lock and a 2 peice airlock ("Junior Airlock"). The later I thought would be good enough for 1 gallon demi's. I find the S-lock works fine, although on my 5gallon bins, I need to barely fill the U bend, or the bins do not get enough pressure to bubble the lock. I had a run...
