    stuck, again

i thought you might say that. I don't have the exact recipe but it was something like this... 9lbs pale extract 1lb specialty grain various spices and orange peel hops per recipe 1 hour boil, top off to 5 gallons. OG 1.068 Dumped batch into fresh cake of WLP400. I don't recall...

    stuck, again

I brewed up a higher gravity pumpkin ale about 3 weeks ago and pitched on top of a live cake of White Labs witbeir yeast (for the hell of it). Fermentation went mad. I was scraping sludge up off the floor for an hour before I put in a blow off tube. Given its hasty start I figured in two...

    Hops cleaning

This is my first time growing/harvesting but I've bought commercial whole hops before. I get the idea, sort of. Now the next question. With two different sets of hops and only one way to dry how can you do two sets at once and not mix them up on the same screen? Dusk

    Hops cleaning

Don't know Boise, I'm in L.A. I have to check humidity, it's been dry this week but by the coast (1 Mile from Pacific) we're pretty humid. Whatdaya think? Dusk

    Hops cleaning

I'm noticing my first season hops (Cascade and Columbus) are probably ready for harvest, they are starting to get brown tinges here and there. Two questions 1. I see spider webs and other insect matter on the cones. Any advice on how to proceed with cleaning? I suppose spraying them off with...

    Keg transfer question

Thank you for catching that. Great thread. What is the main objection to pulling the beer out via tap into an open corny and then sealing later? Just curious.

    Keg transfer question

Since I am a homebrewer and only deal with Corny kegs I've been without a clue on this question. Maybe you experienced guys can fill me in a tad more on how this works. As I understand it, if you purchase a keg full of commercial beer for home kegerators (from BevMo or where ever) before the...

    What happens if...

It's funny I learned this lesson again tonight (and a few times before) since I've never added hops until 10 minutes out I've rarely boiled over like this....boy did this one catch me off guard too. It was so bad I had to move the kettle to the other burner for 10 minutes while I cleaned up the...

    What happens if...

Thanks, knowing the proper nomeclature is half the battle when looking for something in a forum. I'll read up on it and try it on the next brew. (Unsure why the brew "manual" didn't reference this...)

    What happens if...

You can do this? This bends my (weak minded) understanding of extract brew. What about all that talk about hop integration, attenuation and boiling the compounds together? This sounds insane on the surface but I'm not afraid to try new stuff if it works. Anywhere to read up on this?

    What happens if...

Yes, before the hotbreak. My original manual from my LHBS states: "Once a vigorous rolling boil has been reached note the time. You should maintain this for at least 10 minutes before adding hops...When the 10 minutes are up you should then add the bittering hops". I have been doing this...

    What happens if...

...you dump your first hops addition into the wort before you have given the extract the 10 minute boil required to do it's protein chain thing I read about once? I ended up hitting the full boil and in a moment of sheer brain fartness dumped in the hops instead of starting the kitchen timer...

    Carboy/ Keg Cleaner Giveaway

Heck, I should just skip the wait and buy it. Gotta find one in LA.

    Kegerator oddness

There is a fan in there already that runs non-stop but if you think it wouldn't hurt to throw in another one it shouldn't be that tough to do. Does anyone know if the fans that run stock in that unit run off a regulated DC supply or directly off the AC feed?

    Kegerator oddness

A few years ago I bought a used Bev Air kegerator that fits 4 cornies (can't recall the model but you've all seen it). It's taken me time to finally realize this but every time I throw in my 4th keg (at least two have to be full) the kegerator runs overtime and freezes the top of the beers so...

    Check my logic on this...

Following up on this. I did discover that the standard .22ga rifle cleaning kit with the cotton swab end will fit nicely into the dip tubes in a keg. All for $7.95 at Wall Mart. There were alot of residual oils on the rod so I had to rub it off with alcohol several times at first and...

    Finishing hops

It's sorta spilled milk now and I know the mantra, RDWHAHB, BUT, tonight when I removed the heat from the kettle I forgot to add my finishing hops until I realized the pot had been cooling in the sink for 15 minutes. Catching my mistake I dumped the hops in the wort, sanitized a spoon for a...

    Check my logic on this...

That's what I thought. Honestly if I can't realistically keg straight onto the old yeast there's no point in going any further. It's easier to just rinse and sanitize. Not that I have an objection to it. I was curious what sort of academic objections existed to my idea. Also, I bought a .22...

    Check my logic on this...

For the record I always scrub, oxyclean and then idophor the keg to get it sparking clean. (Though I've discovered recently that the dip tubes have matter in them I cannot remove which is a long term issue I'll need to sort out). This is the first time when I've been tempted to try this. I'm not...

    Check my logic on this...

Probably not which is why I've never done this. Then again to the best of my knowledge the keg is already sanitized, is it not? EDIT: Come to think of it, it's not much different than throwing fresh wort on a yeast cake in a used fermenter. (Now I'm really looking for an explanation)
