    Yeast starter

Made my 1st yeast starter for todays brew day and I'm not sure if it is working. I used 1 cup of DME to 32 ozs of water for my wort (boiled for about 10 mins). Pitched yeast at 77 deg in a 1/2 growler and covered with sanitized foil. I swirl it every chance I get. I don't see much activity...

    Moving to All Grain

I did about 4 extract batches before going all grain and I just completed my 3rd all grain. I never even considered goin BIAB because I wanted to ramp up with the equipment immediately and it just seemed so bulky and heavy. But the equipment wasn't all that expensive. I used an old 48qt...

Public apology Yeast smells like farts

I've blamed my farts on the dog and my 1 year old, but never yeast. I'll have to try that one.

Doing First AG in the Morning - Advice or Pointers?

Err on the warm side of strike water temp and let it cool down before doughing in. It is a major pain adding boiling water to increase temps.

    Star san... Lots of foam

When you sanitize and drain your carboy of starsan there is alot of foam. When you transfer your cooled wort to the sanitized carboy the foam stays on top of the wort, so as the wort volume increases and the foam creeps up the sides of your carboy. As this happens the surfaces of your carboy...

First AG Brew, Need help with calculations and Questions

Do you mean measuring your first runnings in your brew pot? If so then I just notched a 36 in CPVC pipe with gallon increments that I measured from volumes in my brew pot. I subtract that from my target preboil volume and there's my batch volume.

    When to filter

Why not just leave it and let it settle out during primary? Rack it right off the top of the sediment into the bottling bucket when the time comes.

    Looking for Advice

Waiting for your first brew is so difficult. Always wondering what it's doing, is it infected, etc. If you want to open it up and look at it or yopu want to rack it to secondary you will probably be fine (as long as sanitation is sound) and you will be rewarded with the satisfaction of looking...

    Pitched Yeast

Yes, this would have been my first choice but my LHBS was out of stock and the San Diego strain was the owner's suggestion. However, as of 24+ hours since pitching yeast I am happy to report that I now need a blowoff tube for the 6 in of kreusen that said yeast has produced. But, needless to...

    Pitched Yeast

I don't know why, but I feel a little intimidated by yeast knowing it's the most delicate part of the brewing process. Everytime I open a vial/packet of yeast I question it's vibiability so imagine my stress when I loose 1/3 of the culture! So from this day on I make a pledge to myself (and...

    Pitched Yeast

I brewed an american ale today with an og of 1.056. I used a whitelabs vial (San Diego WPL090) and pitched directly from the vial. I mixed the yeast into suspension but when I opened the vial it was under pressure and about 1/3 of the liquid from the vial was lost. I was able to get the rest...

    First All grain Brew

I know there are 10 threads a day with people doing their first all grain and have all kinds of questions. I don't really have any questions, only comments. I brewed an All American IPA all grain kit from Austin Homebrew Supply just to make it easy on myself. Let me start by saying this is...

Just brewed my first batch... but is it over before it begins?

I'm new to brewing as well, I'm on my 7th brew now. On my first one I was sure I screwed up everything about it. But it came out great. You will sweat it and agonize over everything in the beginning. Your results will be quite gratifying, trust me. There are certain people on this board...
